Hmmmmm, I have already hollowed out the old controller as I was going to replace the caps with better quality ones, but on getting through the potting compound I found the whole thing had a little bit of fire damage. I also have a battery in a Hailong case, so might look into it a bit more now.

I have and use a gear sensor. I think it's just the fact that derailleurs are not made for torque electric motors and legs put through them.

I thought about an external controller, but the pain of going from an integrated set up controller to getting an external controller fitted and waterproofed just seems like way more hassle, and it removes any sort of selling on potential with the BBS02. I can get smooth gear changes with my sram gear for a whike, but it's keeping them that is the problem, my shimano stuff had to go as I could just never get it smooth for any amount of time.

We were saying it was only a few years off a few years ago, the fact that continental entered the market, is a big player in this field (has money and connections) and has shut down not only this product, but its whole ebike business and this is one of the fastest growing markets too should be a warning to not expect anything anytime soon. All the pre production stuff I've seen over the years have all been mothballed.

Mid drives are better for hills, but they can wreck your gears and make you adjust/replace them constantly. I don't know how much you weigh or the incline of hills, but at 5'4 you should be ok with a hub motor. well most of the 250w stuff we get is 350w thats rebadged anyway, just like all the shimano, brose and bosch motors are all ~600w and badged and limited to 250w. I figured the 500w bafang hub motor would suffice, but there is just so much choice in the hub market and no one seems to recommend bafang hub motors. It's a shame hub motors get trashed so much and everyone rates the bafang mid drives, from what I saw when doing my research and even now doing research on the controllers. I've ordered a new controller for the bbs02 and i'll limit the amps to 18A and see how I get on, but I think I might just pass the bafang kit on (my dads after a kit for fair weather usage) and get a hub kit for myself. I might be really handy when it comes to repair and maintenance but that doesn't mean I want to be doing it all the time.

I wouldn't say it was durable, I would say it runs way too close to its max capable limit. We know they used extremely cheap caps on the original controller and they have used cheap caps on the upgraded version. This is somewhat proven by people upgrading the caps which involves removing the potting compound which isn't exactly an easy thing to do. There's also a healthy market for replacement controllers, this says an awful lot. But maybe I'm not seeing it properly with my blurred vision from riding at the speed of light on my two wheeled granny spearer. /sarcasm

I know what needs doing, I don't think it's worth it for something that's I'm going to restrict way down, as I don't want to run the motor much over 60%, for longevity. I made this clear, but you all got your knickers in a twist like I was some crazy anarchist wanting to see what happens when you hit an oap at 100mph. No it isn't, I regularly drive at 20mph in 30mph zones, i also drive at 35-40 in some 30mph zones. I know the rules on ebikes that go over 15.5mph are not appropriate. The fact that you think all you have to do is get an ebike SVA tested shows you don't actually know jack shit. If anything you're the type of guys that would commit crimes against humanity, then say "I was just following orders", at your trial.

For normal police its usually 10% + 2mph, if it's the traffic cops (white hats instead of black) then they are way more likely to give you a ticket for 31 in a 30. I could do that, then would I be legal? No, theres still more hoops to go through. And lets not get started on trying to insure the thing, because as it's just been lumbered into existing legislation instead of having it's own, most insurance companies won't touch you. I joined here years ago and stopped coming because of all the emotor "letter of the law" nazis, I thought after all this time it might have changed. I was merely asking about a decent hub motor kit, I was open in my disregard of the current rules, but got loads of hassle. I can do 25mph on leg power...... thats fine...... but 25mph on leg and electric.... thats way too fast!?!?!??! See I had to stop riding my bike to work when my missus got a new job that meant i didn't have time to cycle to work, If i got a 15.5 mph legal bike i could take it 1 day a week and I would have to leave 1 hour earlier. With the 750w motor I can do 5 days a week. So for me it's either a slightly faster than legal ebike or the car. Oh and you can't say 10% over is ok. The rule is 15.5 mph, if you think 15.5mph + 10% is ok then you don't agree with the rule.

I'm not driving 25mph everywhere, I'm not treating old ladies as pins on a bowling lane, I'm just prepared to go a bit faster with electric assistance than the current rules state, but still a lot slower than I can legally pedal with no electric assistance.

That guy will get most of his sentence for fleeing the scene and they'll go after him more for everything because he tried to escape justice. Like I said I worked in the field for a decade, I know how it works.

Have you seen any videos and stories of getting it registered? You think this is the best it will ever be? Do you think it's good for uptake of ebikes? For sure tell people what the rules are but I'm a grown ass man. If 38mph is fine under leg power what's the big deal about 25mph with electric and leg power?

I was only ever shattered on my ebike if i wanted to be. Going to work was a leisurely ride in high assistance. Going home was making my heart and lungs bleed in low / no assistance. You think you want a throttle, but just get used to the assistance levels, and pedalling is much more natural.

Don't get the mid drive, from someone in a really similar situation that got a bbs02 750w kit. reasons against mid drives: Bottom brackets are all different, so sometimes you can't get a perfect fit easily. Chainline is off with anything other than a bling ring, and thats better but not great. Power goes through your drive train, so you will be adjusting, maintaining and replacing things a lot more (10 months for me is 3 chainrings, 3 chains, 2 derailleurs [sram holds up better than shimano imho] countless adjusting of gears). The controllers on the bafang are built in and run at their limit, you can use an aftermarket controller if you want, but thats a lot of hassle making the mid drive waterproof. I came to the same conclusion about mid drives after doing my research, but having owned one, I'd say go for a hub. imho I would want a mid drive with a gear box, or an ebike specific IGH. Just waiting for someone to make it and price it in my price range.

I used to work in and with most aspects of law for a decade. The UK law is one of the most restrictive limits with regards e bikes. The politicians that pass the law, didn't spend any amount of time going through all the different speeds, limits and restrictions. one person said something and the few others there made a noise. The light moped classification is based on petrol motors, a lot of things don't apply to electric motors on bicycles. We have had brexit and a few elections happening, so there hasn't really been time to revisit ebike law/rules over the last 3 years. I had my bike limited to 25mph as that is a much safer speed when travelling in traffic, on the road, like you are supposed to. Theres a guy on a "legal" ebike and he tears it up on the path which I personally regard as way more unsafe. The fastest I have been on my bike was 39mph and that was on leg power alone. Roads have a max limit in this country of 70mph, yet the only top end limits on cars, are 155mph on top end sports / super cars. I will abide by the law when it isn't so restrictive and a hindrance to the uptake of ebikes. No one (from the masses) is spending £3k+ for a decent purpose built ebike that cuts out at 15.5mph. Everything under £3k is just a bike with a kit on that you can do for way cheaper yourself. The uptake of ebikes in the UK compared to the EU mainland shows this quite convincingly. Like I said, being exactly law compliant isn't something that bothers me, I trust in myself that I will ride sensibly, I will limit the bike to around 25mph (I drive for a large section on a 40mph road and then a 40mph dual carriageway). I vary my speed according to where I'm riding too, I'm not going 25mph when I'm cycling around with my 7 year old on his bmx.

That's why I was thinking of restricting the amps to keep everything in check. I had just speed restricted the motor before, but now I know restricting the amps would have been better. I honestly don't care about the road legal side, as I think it's a joke and severely stopping people from considering going ebike, probably because they can get more tax revenue from electric car sales. I'd rather restrict it back and have some room to grow if the law changes, than have to buy a whole new kit.

That's just a gearbox (derailleur replacement) anyone building a gearbox and mid drive motor in one?

I did look into getting a IGH wheel built at my local bike shop, but he'd rather just fix punctures it seems. I even started watching videos on how to build my own wheels but as I want to use it daily as a car replacement I'd rather it was done properly. Why do people recommend 250w? Id rather have more power and restrict it back than running something over its max rated. The bbs02 controller set on fire because it runs too close to its max limit.

**NECRO POST** Just a heads up that Conti have shut down their whole ebike business, so it looks like mid drive + gearbox still isn't coming any time soon. Is anyone else making any progress with mid drive + gearbox development?
