25kg apparently including the battery, which is the same as my 26" wheel Eagle. Its also not much smaller physically.

Smaller & Lighter eBike
My wife recently took a tumble off her Freego Wren she has had for perhaps 10 years and uses at least weekly. She loves the bike but being 60 I think she has a little less strength than she once had and the Wren is quite a large and heavy bike, hence a wobble became a crash. She needed a few stitches but without a helmet it would have been much worse. Being only 5' tall and a light build my thoughts are to replace it with something physically smaller and lighter, but still with a 24" wheel for greater downhill stability, and for the potted roads as they are. Any thoughts welcome on suitable models or perhaps even a conversion that will give a range and performance equal to her Wren and my Freego Eagle. Thanks

Freego Eagle Intermittent Power Fault
Hi Not really. The bike goes on and I typically do about 30 - 40 miles a week on it. I have disconnected the brake cut outs by simply pulling the connectors apart and that helped. If it does cut out completely as it does now and then, I push down on the handlebars and compress the suspension and that cures it 99% of the time. If it completely dies, then I stop and switch off and back on again at the battery with the key and that works every time. With my limited knowledge I most suspect a damaged wire in the harness somewhere around the joint box in front of the headstock, hence why pushing down on the handlebars helps. Its sealed but I'll break it open one day, although I look out now and then for a wiring harness on eBay. Hope that helps and any thoughts on a definative fault or a cheap fix gratefully received

Yes its been there for ages, and the battery refurb was to put that out of the equation. I thnk finding and testing a sealed copper wire is probably a bit beyond me, but the fact it always seems to connect with a single bounce of the front wheel seems really odd. Thanks

Freego Eagle Intermittent Power Fault
Hi I have a 4 year old Freego Eagle with a newly refurbished battery and have an intermittent fault that shows up on most rides with a loss of power. What happens is the bike will ride along normally and then, usually later in the ride or almost always over rough ground, lose power. If I lean back and pull the front wheel up an inch off the ground as I'm riding, power always (so far!) restarts again. It might do this 3 or 4 times on a ride, and usually at least once. Initially I had the speedo /power setting unit replaced professionally, with no change. Battery has now been reconditioned, and I have checked all fittings and wires I can access and taped up the brake cut out switches at the push fit connections to ensure they aren't seperating with vibration. Everything looks fine but I'm sure there is a loose wire somewhere, most probably inside the junction box above the front wheel. It looks sealed unlike on some other Freego's, but I'm not worried about trying to open it if anybody has had this problem and thinks this may be where the problem is. Otherwise its a great bike for my needs and most of my rides are 20 - 25 miles, so its trustworthy, just mildly irksome at the moment. Thanks

Battery Replacement
Hi I need to replace the battery which has died on my wifes Freego Wren. With Freego now having ceased trading, I've seen a few advertised on ebay as replacements that will fit and also a chap who rebuilds them in the exisiting case, although I've asked a couple of times and any warrenty still seems a bit 'hazy'. All are abut £300 which is fine, but I'd rather go with smebody who's been recommend that can provide a quality replacement with some warrenty just in case. Thanks

Suggestions for cheapish first ebike
My wife who is 5' tall has a Freego Wren (Freego are out of business I know) which is a 24" wheel She's a confident rider whos had several ebikes and finds that wheel size a lot easier to manage than 26" wheels given the extra weight of an ebike

Westhill Classic - Range Quality and Hill Climbing
I'm looking to change my Freego Eagle which has developed an occasional fault and now a dead battery! I've have spotted the Westhill Classic at a £1200, sold by proper ebike shops with what looks like a good specification. Does anybody have any experience of these, particularly with regard to range, hill climbing ability (does'nt slow to a crawl) and quality. I've seen a claim of 35 miles for an average rider in a reasonably hilly area, which would suit me well. Any thoughts or comments much appreciated Thanks

Freego Hawk Power Setting Fault
A problem with my really reliable old Freego Hawk has come up that I think may be quite simple but I'm hoping someone will know. It's always been really good with no faults at all, but after disconnecting the front LED light when doing some work on it, when I switch it on with the key at the battery, it now runs the checks through the three power settings, with the LED display lights going on and off, and then is ready to use with the power setting on medium (should be low) and won't now switch between settings. Putting the front light on or disconnecting it initally seemed to make it return to normal, but now it does'nt (and that may just have been incidental). I've physically checked and cleaned all the connections for the controller, rear motor etc. and tried different batteries, but it remains the same. Any thoughts would be very welcome. Thanks

Freego Hawk and Wren Rear Disc Brake Conversion
I'm looking to put rear disc brakes on my Freego Hawk and my wifes Freego Wren, and then either putting on a mechanical rear caliper, or upgrade to a set of hydraulic calipers. I believe it's been done, so has anyone on here done this, as it looks like I'll need a threaded adaptor if one is available for the hub to mount the rear disc on, so any ideas on one being available, price etc. would be much appreciated. Thanks for the replies guys. Things have moved on since my last posts. I brought another one of ebay for £80 that works, as it had new batteries, so got a spare battery pack and a full set of spares, and I can take the motor to bits just to satisfy my curiosity about how it works etc. and hopefully put it back together still working. More importantly my wife loves them, and we've now done several trips to local shops and more importantly pubs, where we would have used the car (shops), or not gone (pubs!). One shopping run saw us bring back £60 of grocery shopping (about 6 or 7 heavy bags), which we would never have managed/wanted to manage on our normal bikes. The weight of the bike for my 5' wife is an issue only when she has to lift it or manage it through a restriction like the narrowings on cycle paths, so she can't use it for work which she does on her normal bike occasionally, (as I would'nt be with her to do that) unless she goes in traffic. The weight would be an issue for a novice I think, but she has had several MC's up to 500cc so is used to planning and balance. However that would be the factor that made us move on from these, because other than that, I think for our occasional leisure use, these are great, making a trip to the shops a rewarding event, extending the distance we go, we go at the same speed, and we can leave them anywhere

Many thanks John, I shall let you know how I get on. I managed to get the battery cases off as well without damaging them, so now it's a case of fitting a couple of new cam locks (which I've got) to lock the batteries on, and for just under £400 I'll have a couple of well set up and useable bikes, (about £500 if the batteries do need replacing any time soon). I'm really pleased with that as the consumables will all be good. Things I've done to make them easy to use and hopefully reliable are: All new gear and brake cables - inners and outers Slime tubes Mine needed tyres and a chain Brake blocks Centre stands - both bikes standard stands were awkward to use/not that good Riased handlebars on mine Mudflaps for the front wheels

Thanks. I'm going to a locksmith to sort that. I remembered theres one in town who will open stuff and supply keys to fit the original lock - he did a pair of motorcycle panniers for me once when I lost the keys, I think it was about £20 When that's sorted I'll get batteries for mine I've found the crank sensors not been available since 2008! - so if anyone knows of a spares supplier who does new or used parts, that would be great Thanks

Thanks John, much appreciated They've moved on a bit now. I had to replace all cables and degrease everything, so we now have properly adjusted, and working brakes and gears. The throttle seems cured with proper electrical contact cleaner, and we did what must have been their first ride in years on Sunday afternoon - about 15 miles, which we got around fine and really enjoyed (with a quick pub stop, a big advantage over the car!) It's surprising how many people showed an interest in them, even when we stopped at a local shop! Only isues now are that: I found mine has a crank sensor thats had the wiring cut, so will try and get one of those, but will need to know how/where to wire it in if anyone can give me an idea My batteries were still showing quite full at the end of the ride (4 lights), but definately lost some power on any slight climbs after 4 or 5 miles, but remained fine on the flats - I do'nt know if this is a sign of failing batteries, or if they might recover after a few charge cycles, or am I best to replace them Any thoughts very welcome Thanks

Hi I've just this evening brought two old Powabykes off ebay as a pair for £175, just to see how we get on with electric bikes, and how much we actually use them, before I make a bigger investment. I've been testing them out tonight, so a couple of questions about what they might be, and a couple of things I've found. Both look like the euro design, and both ride well, but need a bit of TLC. One is rear drive, red with a single gear and a band brake, and has a throttle and pedal assist. Does anyone know what model this is, and what age it might be? The second is black, with 21 speeds and has a front drive motor. What age/model might this be? It only has a throttle, not pedal assist as well - is that right? The throttle always picks up, but sometimes a delay, perhaps every 5th sharp opening if you snap it open - I've sprayed electrical contact spray and it seemed better, but is there any other simple thing to look at? The only real niggle with both is I don't have the keys to remove the battery box, only ignition keys. The batteries seem fine but I'll want to take it off eventually, does anyone know a way, or where I could take them to get that sorted? Thanks

Conversion Kit Guidance
Hi I've been looking at the various options on getting an Electric bike, and having tested a few and having really enjoyed using them, I am wondering about converting a couple of existing bikes we already have which are a Trek Mountain bike for my wife, and either a Scott Mountain bike or a 700c wheeled Jamis 3 commuter bike that's about a year old. Both MTB's have front suspension, and when new were about £500 (in 2005) and £800 (in 2002) respectively (to give an idea of quality). I'd be able to fit the kit OK following instructions, and from what I know at this stage, would want a legal kit, ideally a 36V battery and a 40 mph range, so my main thoughts at this stage are that on the £800 - 1000 bikes the components (battery aside) must be relatively cheap, (even if the manufacturers purchase huge quantities) and the Freego's and Ebco's are reliable at those prices, so: what conversion kits would I go for - I've seen are ebay kits at up to £400 with battery - are they any good - and kits between £800 - 1200, (where I think I'd prefer to spend the extra and get a complete bike like an A2B at £1600) Are there any suppliers or contacts for conversions that can be recommended where I'd get a good reliable kit for around £400 and good guidance Is it a real benefit with the consistently higher speeds of an electric bike, to have a suspension fork Many Thanks

Thanks all for the responses. Seem to back up what I've seen and picked up, that for the price they are your getting a good, useable, reliabe package. I'm not really a worrier, but being happy with the ride, and knowing I don't want to spend a lot more than this, I just want to be sure that when I want to use it, it works - I've had a couple of, admittedly Italian motorcycles, that haven't lived up to this modest expectation! I'm interested that it's £200 to upgrade the battery to 16AH, but only £50 more for a new smaller 10AH - almost seems worth going with the original battery, and upgrading and having a spare later. My main purpose for the bikes is a pleasant weather only, round trip commute of about 34 miles once a week for me, and my wife doing 16 mile commutes twice a week, with days out together that are 25 - 35 miles, which is further than we would enjoy unassisted these days

Freego Bikes
Hi Went to the cycle show and tested many bikes, particularly liking the A2B, Cube and Anssman. Since then we have ridden a couple of Freego's and wre really impressed with the ride, power delivery and general finish, especially given the price. We're looking for two bikes, probably a Hawk or Eagle, and a Wren or Regency if we go for these. I like the credit deal, warranty and local dealer, but I'm really interested in the reliability and likely battery life, as I want them to be something we enjoy, not worry about, and I really don't know what's what, with all the makes available. If anybody could give me some thoughts it would really help. I'm not in a rush, but looking forward to getting something Many Thanks
