Confused Newbie ....

Featured Replies

Hi there

Newbie here from Dorset ....

I am considering an electric bike for commuting and need a MTB style, as part of my journey is on pretty rough farm tracks. It is only about 8 miles each way but it is very hilly and I was hoping to use the e-bike to gain fitness and confidence on the route and not arrive at work needing a lie down in a darkened room :)

I have been looking at lots of great info on here, but I still don't really know where to go from here. I have seen that some bikes have both pedal assist and throttle, which sounds good to me, but is there a downside to that? I am also pretty heavy, so need something substantial and with good build quality. Budget negotiable, but willing to spend more for something that will last and cope with the potholes and mud, etc .....

Any recommendations will be gratefully received :)

Thanks,

Jane

Ezee bikes are strong and have powerful motors. The Woosh Big Bear is a bit cheaper and also has a very strong motor. They both have throttles. There's no down-side to throttles, only an up-side. I would've recommended the Kudos Tornado too, but I think that they did something with the throttle, so check with them. If you can get to Bristol on Sunday, there's a free ebike show, where you can try out many different bikes. It'll be at the bottom of Park Street.

I have a haibike sl29, love it. Use it everyday now. 29" wheels. You can get around 40 miles out of it and one of the high powered modes. The Bosch drive system very good and mounted above the lower bike frame (unlike some of the other brands) so it is less likely to get hit on bumpy tracks. Handles off-road really well as on. So much fun up the hills as well as down.

Downside £2.5k plus

Thanks both, after careful deliberation and a 180 mile round trip to try the bike, I ordered an Oxygen E-mate.

In fact, we were so impressed, hubby is getting one too!

Can't wait to get going on them .....

Cheers

Jane
