Can my power controller be changed?

I have a basic power controller on the handlebars that allows low, medium or high power when pedalling. The problem is, to turn off all power I have to hold the + button for several seconds, which is a right pain whilst cycling. Can I upgrade the unit so I can cut all power or would that require a new controller as well? If so, could anyone post a link please? Many thanks.

Do you just want to cut power so that you can pedal without power? If so, it's dead easy to do. You can have a "standby switch" by cutting some insulation of a brake wire to expose the two wires inside, then solder a switch across the two wires. When the switch is on, it cuts the power to the motor. Here's a switch:
