They are depending on kick detection for the motor to operate, smart idea, but I'm not entirely confident the authorities will accept this as an alternative to pedals, since the law clearly states pedalling is the legal control method.

It's pretty unflykly to be legal without pedals.

It isn't a bicycle it is a scooter. There are even more head injuries for children riding scooters than skateboards. Add electricity and... it is a motor scooter, just like a Vespa is! Helmet, insurance etc, no problem about it being legal it just won't/can't be a pedelec.

As I posted above, I'm not entirely confident of it's legality but haven't ruled it out since a test case could well rule it legal.

 

What counts in that circumstance is the spirit of the law, and the spirit of the law in this instance is that when human propulsion ceases, power must cease too. Since this senses the kick thrusts and cuts power in the absence of a thrust, it does seem to conform with the spirit.

 

If it's shown to perform satisfactorily in that manner, there would be no reason to rule it illegal on lack of pedals grounds. However, it could still be ruled illegal on other grounds, such as it being considered to have lack of intrinsic rider control or stability.

 

It's an interesting one to watch and I hope enough sell to attract a ruling.

Sounds great - it would be good with a 1000w motor, razzing down the pavements of London, running over policeman's toes!!
