54,6v or 48v charger for 48v battery?

Just curious, since one seller of the same 48v battery gave me a 48v charger and the other seller gave me a 54,6v charger.

Will one of them work better? Or is one actually bad for the battery?

My Gtech charger is 41v, battery is 36v..

 

I think the battery has a built in controller to avaoid overcharging or damage.

 

Maybe the higher voltage charger will charge it slightly faster?.

No, that's really not how it works.

 

For current to flow, there must be a potential difference (measured in Volts).

 

So, for current to flow into a battery (and charge it) the charger must be at a higher voltage than the battery.

Makes sense, we look for 14v/ 14.5v charge rate on 12v SLA motorbike batteries.

54.6 is the charge voltage you want, but the "48 volt" one sold may also be about 55 volts, just given the nominal battery voltage name to avoid confusing the uninitiated.

 

There's a similar inaccurate naming thing with lithium batteries, commonly referred to as 24 volts and 36 volts to stay with the convention of those with earlier chemistries. In truth they are 26 volts and 37 volts, the first commonly having 7 cells of nominal 3.7 volts (=25.9) and the second having ten cells of nominal 3.7 volts.
