I recently saw a courier on an ebike that was moving without pedling. I know these are not entirely legal here in the UK but I'm looking to convert my own ebike so that I have both peddle assist and throttle for when I'm tired. I have a much longer commute than my current fitness level so I think this would give me the best of both worlds and let me improve my fitness whilst getting me to work by avoiding public transport.

 

My technical knowledge is not great so does anyone know of anyone who would be willing to make this customisation for me in London? (preferably south)

If you have a cadence sensor system it will give power as long as you are turning the pedals; no need to put any effort in. (ghost pedalling)

You are right; the sensors just supply the data and it is the controllers that actually use the data. So: 'pedals turning' signal from sensors to controller, controller decides to let the current pass from battery to the motor, and the motor actually converts the electrical energy to mechanical energy.

 

The display also plays its part. You give it the settings which it passes to the controller; these settings tell the controller how much current to let pass.

A throttle if fitted effectively provides the controller with both a switch (zero or non-zero) and a setting (how far throttle pushed). And in a very different way so do torque sensors.

 

Some cadence sensors also are actually cadence sensors; they detect how fast you are pedalling and inform the controller. Most so called cadence sensors are however simply on/off.
