PSWPower says Bafang UART controllers can be used with CAN bus BBS01B, BBS02B etc. motors

Featured Replies

Alice at PSWPower told me UART versions of BBS01B and BBS02B controller, can be used with CAN bus versions of those motors. If correct, this could be useful for Bafangers wanting motors for spare parts, or motor replacement.

I thought you knew that. The controller and LCD have to match UART or CAN. the motor only has phase and hall wires connected. The PAS is standard 3 wires. I, m not sure if CAN controllers need a CAN battery. Does anybody know?

Alice initially said "No", it won't work, then followed up with "Yes" the following day. I was hoping Bafang hadn't changed connector design for hall and phase, they haven't:

I saw a Youtube bench test last year with a generic two wire battery successfully powering one of the newer CAN bus Bafang controllers and mid-drive motors, it worked, but the dude testing wasn't sure if it'd work on the road for long. Of course no data was available from the battery to the display. I didn't pay much attention because I'm not interested in buying anything CAN bussed. This dude says the battery communication line doesn't need to be connected:

No, the Can connector to the battery is optional

Battery Cable: XT60 (same as UART) and a New Battery Communication Cable. If you use a BAFANG battery with communication and a BAFANG display, you can view other battery information through the display or the BAFANG GO+ App, such as battery temperature, total battery capacity, remaining battery capacity, number of cycles, discharge time, voltage for the cell, etc. If you use other batteries, you can ignore the communication cable, as you cannot view other battery information (the experience is the same as UART).

Not encouraging anyone to break the law but... If you set speed limit to 25kph, firmware "Speed Meter Signals" = 1, and use two spoke magnets a few inches apart, this befuddles the BBS01B's controller effectively derestricting speed, or at least it does throttled on the bike stand with a v-brake brake pad pressed lightly against the rim. So in theory, if you suddenly felt the need for speed on a private road you wholly own or whatever and you have two Bafang or Cateye magnets, with one magnet normally facing away from the speed sensor, simply turn it around. Must buy my own road for a test...

Could you just change the wheel size ? If you set the wheel size on a 26" bike to 16" then a indicated speed of 15 km/h would equate to an actual speed of roughly 15 mph

Yep, but this doesn't involve changing any settings, "Speed Meter Signals" = 1 by default in firmware, so a close inspection by an unfeasibly clever rozzer wouldn't reveal you've derestricted by changing wheel size or speed limit via the display.

And / Or set a password on the settings

I guess that varies with displays? My DPC18 display only has password protection for turning on the system, no additional password for settings. A bit rubbish because only the display is passworded - if my conversion was stolen, the thief would only need to steal a new display. Also, the DPC18 doesn't have a Wattmeter. Which display do you have?

Hi all

I see that topcashback.co.uk are offering 20% cashback on Aliexpress today.

Been thinking about getting a spare Bafang BBS01b 36v 250w motor (either bare drive or full kit)

Does anyone know of a trusted AliExpress seller still supplying Uart versions of the motor?

Many thanks

Great! Nulls the VAT they add to the advertised price at checkout. How does that cashback work? I may have asked before. You give them your bank account details which they sell to a Nigerian Prince laundering an inherited blood diamond fortune? Or do they pay into your Paypal account?

I was half thinking of getting a spare myself. Unfortunately they never state if UART in motor and motor kit listings, you have to ask, and whenever I'd asked it's blasted CAN bus now and forevermore. Some listings state CAN, but if CAN isn't mentioned there's no way of knowing if UART without asking, and when I'ved asked, it's damned CAN bus.

Sorry guys, it was definitely 20% this morning when I looked, they had dropped it to 6% shorty after I posted.

Hopefully they'll have the 20% back on sometime soon. I'll cue up a motor in my basket ready when I find a uart supplier

Cheers
