Hi Pedelecs fans!

 

I have been looking in to which e-bike I want to buy (my first purchase - currently on a 15 year old heavy mountain bike for my 10 mile commute from Leeds to Bradford - some lovely 2 mile hills!). I have pinned it down to the Powabyke X24 2011 - or maybe a Wisper 905.

 

I am looking to spend £1000 - £1300 max. 24 gears seems like a good idea for a Yorkshire rider like myself. I want a bike that looks like a bike also - if that make sense?

 

So... Friday I called Evans cycles - asked can they get the an X24 into their Leeds store for a test ride and to my shock I was told NOT TO BUY THE BIKE! They guy said that they have had nothing but problems with them and Powabyke have been difficult to help get things fixed.

 

I don't want to believe him since it looks like a great bike, but at the same time, this could be true! Any advice pppllleeeaaassseee?? I have just been given the nod at work to purchase through cycle2work and need to get an ebike ASAP since my old bike is such hard work!

If you have 2 mile hills and want to do the return 20 miles on one charge, the X24 may not be a good choice.

 

Quite a few owners have reported much less than 20 miles range, and although nominally 6.5 Ah, some of their batteries had cells marked 4.5 Ah. Either capacity can be marginal over 20 miles with 2 mile hills unless with a strong rider.

 

The Wisper would not be troubled at all with that commute range, and Wisper's support is second to none.

Alien Aurora, yes it's illegal but those hills and a 20 mile commute can be managed with no problem on the Aurora and I am speaking of personal experience, 28-32 mile range is what I am getting, it's a good looking bike and I have had many compliments to that effect. As they say "The choice is yours"

When I was looking to buy my first electric bike 12 months ago I ordered the X6 but unfortunately whilst the bike was available, the battery was not. I knew about the limited mileage from the battery and intended buying a spare to go with it.

Anyway, I cancelled my order and got a Wisper 905 SE city with a 14a battery. It's brilliant. I always look for at least a 20 mile ride as I know the battery will last. I cannot go anywhere without hills. The last test of the battery is the quarter mile hill home. I have to use 1st gear but can manage to cycle all the way. I watch all the other 20 year olds pushing their pedal cycles up and I'm 70 years old. Long Live Electrics!!

Hahaha, this reminds me of a time I was riding down a path, and I see a tandem ahead. Once we got to the end of the path I could see it was part of a convoy of quite a few Lycra clad riders, who covered most ages, genders and races. I got a rush of adrenaline as I knew the massive hill was coming up. I gave a wave to one old man riding in the convoy, and started pedalling to help out the motor. I was half way up the slope, and looked back and was shocked to see how far ahead of them I got.

 

But to give these Lycras credit, some of them were OAPs, and most people I see riding there have to get off their bike and push it up the hill.

If you want a bike that looks like a bike, and rides like one but with the extra push up the hills, have a look at the Kudos King.

 

I do a 20/24 mile commute everyday, including hills, and have racked up 700 miles during the past two months.

 

It's a very good bike.
