Nice job Andy, pity the battery isn't on the bike though.

This is certainly the best way to use these direct drive motors, on high voltages for speed when they are at their best.

Don't go overtaking any police cars on those private roads though. ;)

I have got used to the battery on my back (balanced weight, light bike) with my DH TWD (downhill, two wheel drive) ebike, it makes the ebikes feel like normal bikes, i tried the battery on the rack it just doesn’t feel right.

On the rack I agree Andy, that's a large heavy battery to have high at one end of the bike. I was thinking of an in-frame casing maybe, though it's true what you say about the bike feel. Our bodies and anything we carry are really sprung weight, remote from the bike.

Thanks. Oh my!! these batteries are quite expensive, this makes the cost of everything close to £900.
The kit cost 207pounds, and the Ping battery cost 300 pounds 10 months ago, total cost for this set up 500 pounds.
No import duty
And no tax
Plus around 100 pound for the bike.

Total cost all in up and riding around 600 pounds.

I have updated the pictures in the first post needed to upgrade the brakes plus half a dozen other little changes to improve the overall running of the bike.

Just finished a distance test

The bike is an old Raleigh Sprinter with standard 700cc wheels the 28”rear wheel went straight into the frame without any modification.
I have had the bike running for a while now without any major problems the motor and controller work fine together, the rear sprocket had to be replaced strait away as it was CRAP also the throttle was cheap and very jumpy and needed replacing, plus the wiring from the battery to the controller wasn’t thick enough gage and was getting to warm used 10 awg which is fine.

thanks for the reply. how did you waterproof the controller/battery?

For the battery I found a plastic CD storage box that was slightly bigger than the battery and bms padded and fitted the battery into than, then put the box into an old camera bag then put that into a back pack.
I have been off the bikes a few times now the battery has survived a couple of heavy hits on and off road.
As for the controller I took the side covers off and ran a bead of silicon sealant around the rubber seals, then got a small box from maplins, drilled a hole in either side and ran the wires and connector into that (See pic of bike) Small Narrow Box : Plastic Enclosures : Maplin I used pvc tape to seal up each end, so far have had no problems with wet weather.

I know this is an old post but I thought i would share a picture of my 2.5 year old LiFePo4 48v 12amp battery repaired abused and pushed to destruction by my modded 1000w DD Ebay motor kit ImageShack Album - 14 images.

No fires or venting from the pouches has ever happened with these cells, just as well as i use a backpack.
These cells are rated as a 2c (24amp) max discharge they were being pushed to nearly 4c (40amp+) by this motor kit. but still lasted 1.5 years with this setup.

Didn't they do well Andy!

Was this a Li Ping battery or another ebay one that was with the kit?

What's the difference between the two versions and is the latest much better?
My v2 had the 4amp pouches with smaller tabs and as earlier BMS without the lights, V2.5 has 5amp prismatic cell with bigger tabs and the newer BMS has the balancing lights, the battery is packaged a lot better feels more robust and solid.
The 20amp cells are a much better size for the higher wattage motors, I use the V2.5 with an X5 motor which is still asking a lot from a ping but the cycle annalist keeps the battery in check,
My v2 was used for my 250 watt Ezze motors and if I hadent gone to higher powered motors controller I have no bought the battery would still be ok today.

Nice write up with pics and stats too! Good to see an eBay kit reviewed... I've seen that seller offering those 1000w kits for a long time. I bet that is fun to ride at those speeds too! That's approaching moped speeds. I can only get those speeds downhill, pedalling like crazy with a strong tail wind :D
