Hi folks - I'm posting this with full awareness that this is the sort of thing that gets asked all the time but hopefully with enough added specifics to make it worth asking and hopefully straightforward to answer.

Basically I'm just looking for a bit of independent expertise.

I'm a bit out of shape but want to get back into cycling to work - an 8 mile journey but with a couple of steepish inclines that on my current Specialized Hardrock Sport Disc 29er 2014 leaves me in too much of a sweat for the journey in and unwilling to travel home after a long shift.

I've had two off the shelf e-bikes recommended to me as follows:

Ghost Andasol Trekking 2 E-Bike 2017 - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ghost-andasol-trekking-2-e-bike-2017/rp-prod148465?utm_source=customerops&utm_medium=techsupport&utm_campaign=CRC007

Would these bikes be enough with the 250w to knock off the difficult edge and make commuting every day a more inviting prospect?

I'm reluctant to convert my current bike as it's got a bit of wear and tear but would a cheap bike + conversion kit be a better option? Or am I being too cautious and should just get on with mid-crank conversion for my bike?

My budget is a maximum £1600. So alternatively, is there a decent e-bike brand out there comparable or better than the two options recommended by Chain Reaction Cycles

I'd be hugely grateful for any advice.

Thank you.

Hi Dave,

All road-legal eBikes within the UK come in at 250W which is more than enough power for pretty much all types of riding. The main difference you will see between motors is the torque figure. The 2 bikes recommended above from Chain Reaction come with lower end motors, Bosch Active Line & Yamaha PW. If you want the maximum torque to take the edge off hill climbing, I would recommend the Bosch Performance CX motor.

Often when speaking with commuters, many people tend to opt for a hardtail mountain bike, rather than a hybrid bike so they have the option to do a bit more off-road riding when they're not commuting. We do have several different models within your budget, if you wanted to pop me a private message, I will be happy to discuss a few different options with you.

Ones I would recommend looking at would be the Cube Reaction Hybrid, we have a great deal on an ex-display model currently if you're after an 18" frame - https://www.rutlandcycling.com/385438/products/ex-display-cube-reaction-hybrid-hpa-400-2017-electric-bike-18-inch.aspx

We also have some really good offers on the Scott E-Scale 720 - https://www.rutlandcycling.com/bikes/electric-bikes/scott-e-scale-720-2017-electric-hardtail-mountain-bike-black_373436

Many thanks,
Luke

Using an ebike for commuting can be quite expensive. The biggest cost is depreciation, so the cheapest adequate one would be best if you wat to be pragmatic.

If you're already a cyclist, just about any ebike will have adequate power.
