In my teens I managed 45 on the flat, slip steaming a bus, full throttle on the Izip terrifies me these days.

Sorry Mark 49.28 mph is not 50mph.

But it is nice to see optimistic people in here who say you can have it because of air density. They are the same people who will tell you that Zola Budd and Greg Whatshisnameski(tennis player) were English.

You will just have to wait until the summer and try again.

I am only this negative because my terminal speed on my bike even going down Everest, would be a quite a bit less less than 50mph............thankfully. For anything quicker I will get the Moto Guzzi out.

Cracked it in 2002 coming down Mont Ventoux - actually hit 60. It was almost worth the pain of flogging up the beast .........

I think that makes you the forum record holder Hugh. We have had some reaching the high 50s, but I can't recall anyone reaching 60 mph. That's about tops for the Tour de France riders coming down off an alpine climb stage, so well done.

I think highest speed reached in the event where a group of our e-bikes followed the Tour of Britain stage three route in Somerset one year was member Tiberius (Nick) who reached 45.4 at one point.

I was a bit younger and a lot fitter then! You get more speed up a bit lower down when the mountain becomes a bit less twisty - before that you have to keep jumping on the brakes a) to stay on the road and b) to avoid hitting cars ahead of you!

You should've surprised them by overtaking! :D

Once when I had a very fast e-bike I was cheered by a group of kids when I rapidly overtook a 20 mph van and car on a 20 limit* speed bump stretch. Couldn't help but smile!

* UK limits are motor vehicle law, not applying to bikes.

I think we have to class recumbents separately though, I know 70 mph plus speeds are more readily attainable on them, for obvious reasons of course.

On national geographic last night a Frenchman was biking down a volcano going for the world record....
60kph ten seconds....196kph....over 200 then the frame snapped in half, he lived .
I will search for it in you tube later.
