Electric bikes are heavy, even without the battery, and the only way I can transport mine (when it arrives) is on the car roof. I don't have a towbar and I'm told that the rear-mounted kind of rack is unsuitable for my car.
A simple block and tackle system would be a cheap and cheerful solution to hoisting the bike up but it would depend on finding a suitable overhanging beam or tree branch with quite high ground clearance. Not always possible.
I've come across something called an Atera Bike Lift, which uses hydraulic power to lift the bike and then secure it onto the roof. Does anyone have any experience of using one of these and are they any good? It looks like it would generate even more wind resistance than a normal rack. It's expensive (about £200 per bike), but then back injuries and/or scratched paintwork could be even more so!
