The difference is that in the close confines of the chain internals, with the original grease trapped inside by a thick layer of added grease, the particles generated as a result of wear cant escape.
True, though the effect of those is miniscule in practice. As said, I get so much chain and sprocket life from the simple very occasional application of grease, taking but seconds, I just cannot be bothered to go through all the routines described above. I've tried so many of these over the years and never found the gains were worth the considerable extra work.

As I implied above, each to his own, they're all good in their own ways for differing benefits, longest chain life or least effort. My way with hub gear chains gives me long chain/sprocket life with almost the lowest effort possible, and that suits me fine.
