Garmin Varia radar, £80 @ Halfords

I've taken a punt at that price. Anyone know if it can feed into a smartphone app, or am I gonna have to scour ebay for a garmin head unit now?

Either selected garmin computers or it's own dedicated head unit.

The variable rear light seems a good idea but I wonder what the cyclist does with the information displayed. If you get the red light that a vehicle is approaching fast, what do you do?

This is how it shows on mine. It picks up cars from 100 meters away and can show up to 8 at one time.

It's not actually radar.. it just measures a speed difference between you and the following cars and displays anything moving at about 10mph or mire faster than you are.. in heavy traffic where there isn't that difference in speed it doesn't work.
