I want to learn more about the laws and the e-bikes in Europe, and I thought if I registered here, I might be able to occasionally ask a question. I'll try not to be too annoying. Thanks in advance.

Hi Spinningmagnets,

Welcome to the Pedelec Forum, a friendly place to discuss e-bikes.

The basic laws for e-bikes in the European Union are a motor limit of 250w and speed assisted limit of 25 Km/h or 15.5 MPH. Throttles are not allowed in mainland Europe i.e. pedelec only, but in the UK, the throttle is still permitted.

There are a few anomalies, e.g. in Germany and Switzerland 'S' class bikes with a speed of up to 45Km/h are allowed, but they have to licensed and insured just like a small motorcycle.

The Isle of Man in the Irish Sea which is not within the European Union, seems to have no laws regarding e-bikes, so basically anything goes:D

It would be interesting to know the legal requirements for e-bikes in Kansas.
