Each to his own but this is the sort of thing I go on a ride to clear my head from. Will we be seeing riders going along peering down at their smart displays like the prats you have to walk around in towns oblivious to their surroundings - head down glued to their phones?

Time to join us in Smartphone land? A cheap Android phone is less than £50 these days, could be worth it if you want to customise your ride.
I ride a bike for the simple pleasure. Because I live in a very hilly district I use an electric bike.
BUT, I want simplicity.

I think that I my have given the wrong impression, the smartphone is used to program and tweak the settings prior to riding and to download when you return. Thats how I read the brief. Not that you have to have it with you and be staring at the whole ride, that's for Strava w*nkers.

If you want simplicity, just ride the Bosch with the stock settings.
