How much current can a brake cable take?

It might sounds like a strange question, but today i found out.

No, i didn't have a headfit and connect the battery any other way!!!

What i was trying to do was TIG weld a captive nut on the inside of the rear frame.
Simple....connect the clamp to somewhere metallic near the weld point (green arrows).



What actually happened was the current went up the rear suspension frame to the main frame, up the stem down the handlebars throught the brake lever and down the brake cable (red arrows) and melted everything in it's path.
I didn't think any thing was wrong until i lifted my mask and couldn't see through the smoke.



Of course, i know the reason why this happened now, the rear suspension links have nylon bushes in them.
Anyway the answer is 25A (or much less).

Much later (after the smoke had cleared fom the garage) on the results of my afternoons work is complete.
New torque straps.
