i was thinking about the bafang BBS01 mid drive as a beginner. i was wondering how long they last and what kind of things go wrong.

3900 miles on my BBS02 and it has never been touched and still as sweet as when it was brand new.
I do quite a bit of offroading including a couple of fords that come over the top of the motor and it takes it all in its stride.
With the lower power of the BBS01 I would expect it to be even more reliable long term.

CD kits are easy to fit. Watch this video:

However, if you ride a home build bike, you are expected to maintain the bike yourself. Maybe it's time to brush up your skills.

Pretty much the same as kinninvie, BBS02, 2500 miles, reprogrammed for performance far greater than factory spec. Majority of riding is forest tracks, off road terrain etc..

Only had to relube the final drive a couple of times, as it gets a little noisy over time. Easy job to carry out though.
