Are these kickstarter things ever worth a punt?

I guess some of 'em must be - An awful lot of people seem to invest, but probably not in a 4-grand mtb whose frame appears to be split down the middle, like the fuselage of an airfix kit

It seams a bit pricey for a gear system not much different to Shimano/sturmley archer. And an enclosed chain as all comfort bikes used to be.
