It's "pedalling", guys (what you do with pedals), as opposed to "peddling" (what you might do with drugs, etc.)!

I wish you the best of luck with this bode. I've been trying all my life with this, and have posted it many times in this forum, all to no avail.

Perhaps the drug dealer image is more glamorous than the cyclists.

Trying again:

In cycling:

pedal, pedalling

In itinerant selling:

pedlar (English) peddler (US) - one who sells informally.

peddle, peddling - the action of selling in that way.

.. not to mention my two grammatical pet hates, much seen on this Forum:

'it's' when it should be 'its'

and

'there' when it should be 'their' .......

Yes but none of those additions are cycling ones.

Though I'm also concerned about the state of spelling in Britain today, I often post "not to worry" when posters are apologetic about their general spelling since this isn't a site devoted to correct English.

However I think we can expect the correct word to be used for a cycling reference, not one with a very different meaning unrelated to cycling.

innit.

Hah, as long as we're talking about language and cycling. I must say this UK Reuter's review of Mama Mia had the funniest use of the word "bike" I'll probably see all year.

Meryl Streep plays a single mum who is the impoverished owner of a dilapidated island taverna, about to celebrate the wedding of her only daughter. This daughter (Amanda Seyfried) wants her dad to take her down the aisle but because Meryl was once the island bike she doesn’t know who the father is.

~

meanwhile, if I ride more than once a day, can the second one be recycling?

Quite true Elephants, but with a gob the size of half the face, it's not too demure!

I guess you're right on smiley, not a word I use normally.

I can't remember who was telling this story, but an adult was signing off "LOL" thinking it meant "Lots of Love" instead of "Laughing out Loud" when sending messages to her kids.

Naturally, this would cause some distress depending on the circumstances.

Hi Stuart,

Libby Purves is wonderful - but what made me laugh so much was the reason for your edit. 'Punctuation'. Just brilliant. :D
only a cycling sadist would pun on the words puncturation
or someone waiting for a bike
