I'm a long time user of Garmin GPS both on and off bike, and I've been very happy with it. But my current phone is on its last legs, and it occurs to me that I should consider getting a phone that I could use as a replacement for my even more ancient Garmin.
In the past I have stuck with my Garmin partly because of battery life, but mainly because it is waterproof and very robust.
My wife tried using her phone on her bike, using a variety of cases to protect her phone form the elements, but for one reason or another none of these were very successful and she gave up.
I know lost of people use their phones ratehr than dedicated GPS devices. So - what do you do about protecting them, while leaving the phone readable and usable? More specifically, can you either:
a) Recommend a phone that costs less than £400 but is sufficently waterproof to withstand heavy rain all day (preferred option), or
b) Recommend some sort of case that protects the phone, but still lets you read the screen (even in steamy hot weather) and use the touch screen?
I know that I can get an IP67 rated phone if I pay £600 plus but I'm not in that market, I'd rather get a cheap phone and carry on using the Garmin than that.
I'm not concerned here about the pros and cons of mapping or apps or any of that in the gps v phone debate; just the protection of the phone.
