What is a battery cycle?

Batteries can be recharged a certain number of times, but what is "a charge"? For example if I charge my battery, put it into my bike and turn on the computer to see if out really is fully charged, find that it is not, and put it back on charge again, is that a second charge?

I ask because I am finding it hard to tell when my battery is fully charged based on the red/amber/green light on the battery.

Putting it straight back on charge like that means the two will be one charge only. The chemistry will still be active so the battery isn't getting the stresses of a cold start to a charge.

Basically only a full charge counts as a charge in battery life terms, those who top up their lithium batteries frequently don't gain a full charge count with each small top up.
