I see, part of me thinks the cassette sale might be due to returned kits they are trying to re-sell, but I could be wrong. Thanks for your advice mate, I'd rather go for an option with less issues when it is within my means - have requested cancellation of the cassette version.

As for that clip, that's crazy, goes to show that the ones with the mechanical know- how aren't always the ones on screen.
Sorry, I didn't notice the kit that I linked above is the 350w version. You must get a 250w motor to be legal, which, of course, is out of stock. That's why they're pointing at the cassette version. A cassette version will work OK. It's just that the freewheel version would have been slightly better if you could get one.

With the additional weight and speed of the ebike kit, rim brakes wear through the rim, then you need a new motor wheel or have to rebuild it with a new rim.

I don't know how many times people come on here with their unpowered bikes, and they argue about how they're happy with their rim brakes. Ebikes are different, as you'll find out. Rim brakes might be acceptable if you're very light.

No need for a new cassette, just remove and put it on the new motor wheel
Between the previous 2024 Cube Nature and these 2 disc braked boardmans which would be your pick to convert to e-bike:

Boardman DRC Hybrid 8 yrs old, good condition, carbon forks, sram gears, serviced gears and brakes recently, says it was £800 new and asking approx £180

Boardman X7 Hybrid 7 years old, good condition as stored indoors, suntour nex fork, 3x9 sram x5 gears, tektro auriga brakes, asking approx £180 also

Which of the 3 would you prefer to convert, or are they all in the same ballpark in terms of reliability/ suitable to convert?

I think the drc hybrid is different to the other two, no suspension, very light, almost like a flat bar cyclocross bike

Either of the other too would probably be more similar to your existing bike

My escape 3 doesn't have a suspension so I bought a seat post one. But I defo would like a proper one in next bike, thanks for the tip.

I ended up going for the Cube which was in a bit of a state (managed to get it for £120) so cleaned and calibrated the gears and bled the brakes and it works really well.

The Yose kit arrived on Tuesday, installed it until the early hours of Wednesday and the battery didn't fit using both screws on the bottom tube as it would clash with the seat tube, I've ordered an alignment bracket (£15 on amazon as per Yose advice) and waiting for it to arrive.

The bike feels heavy now (was 14.3kg) and I imagine it must be closer to 19kg and biking on level ground is slower now even without the batttery. Glad I still have the Giant bike untouched for lightweight rides.

I did test it with the battery using using one screw, shims and duct tape to hold the battery and it works well up hill. Didn't bother installing the throttle as it is too slow.

Thanks for all the help guys, part of me still feels a bit gutted I didn't go for 350w but at £266 (with voucher SHOPPING10) can't really complain and at least I won't have to worry about coppers.

On a side note I sold my son's 24" bike as he outgrew it thinking he'd now need 26" but he can still ride this 28" medium sized Cube with seat on lowest setting so he'll probably use it more than me.

Brilliant, so £400.including donor bike with hydraulic disk brakes, and , as you say you've still got your original bike.

Eta the 250w Yosepower kit is slightly stronger up hills than the 350w

Let us know how you get on with it when you get the bracket

You wouldnt benefit from the 350w kit much imho, i am no lightweight and the yose 250w kit on my bike scoots me upslope at 15mph no problem and real hills are climbed with comfortable input and me in the seat not standing and puffing..

The controller and its speed control is a bit meh! but once you get used to it its ok, I find a little extra play in the rear brake lever lets me use the brake cut off without engaging brakes for finer motor control.

I'm getting 10 -12mph on a steep long hill and did it in 5 mins whereas before converting it'd be over 15 mins plus stopping for breathers so yeah it's definitely a good step in the right direction.

Can't wait for the bracket to come so I can ride it without worrying about the battery coming apart.

Lol. If you are like other people on here you will be modifying it continuously or building another one within 3 months.

Having both I can vouch for the fact that the Yose 250w (AKM95RX) is a better hill climber than the 350w. Unrestricted it will top out at around 18mph. The 350w. will achieve about 23mph and accelerates faster. For alround use the 250w. is the better option, but it is held back by the Lishui 15amp. speed-based controller.
A KT current based "torque simulation' controller and display will transform it. I bought a KTM 20a. controller and a KT-LCD3 display from PSW power which provided much better control and more power by setting it to 18amps.
The KT controller will work with 48 volts so I now have a 48v. battery. The difference is like night and day. Set at 48v. 15a. I can ghost pedal up most hills bouncing on and off the 15.5mph speed limit in PAS 5. Acceleration is more than enough even in PAS 1, which I use most of the time. This, in conjunction with the legal throttle boost while pedalling (P4=1, C4=3 - thanks saneagle!) makes the Yose 250w. a very useful motor. Just a shame that it's only available as a kit with 36v battery. It's still worth the extra expense to upgrade it though.

Thanks Cadence, that sounds like a decent potential upgrade for the controller, display and battery when the current battery starts acting up.
