What gears do you actually use?

Interestingly the Tongxin rear wheel motor has the wires coming out on the left (non-drive) side. This obviously keeps them clear of the chain and gears. I had wondered why others didn't do it this way.

What gears do you actually use?

Nowadays you just change the whole set. Freewheels are not that expensive though - £5-20 depending on what type. The hard bit is getting the old one off! That needs a special tool and a lot of strength and leverage to turn it.

    E-Rockit

Intriguing idea but I have to say my first reaction is that it sounds like he is trying to emulate the effect of not having gears, which seems strange. Bikes have gears because it is comfortable to pedal within a certain cadence range regardless of speed, so why would anyone want to neutralise...

    E-Rockit

Agreed - sounds like a minor cul-de-sac in the development of electric bikes but one that a reporter has spotted and attached too much significance too! I didn't play the film but wondered if you got the full amount of power the moment you turned the pedals, or if there is some sort of torque...

    Powacycle Infineum electric bike

Very interesting. You've also answered my question on how many gears you use - ie not many of them! Glad that bike No. 3 is working for you now Frank

    Review of Kalkhoff ProConnect S.

It's simple - John always gets the bargains! I still remember he paid about #100 less for his Wisper than I did nearly 2 years ago!

What gears do you actually use?

Interesting. What really struck me today was how the motor keeps the bike at a very steady speed - therefore you just don't need to change gear. Apart from the really steep hills (up or down) I was doing 15-16 mph for long periods at a time. On a non-electric you have much greater variation...

What gears do you actually use?

I was pondering this today while out e-biking. The bike has a triple chainring with 28-38-48 and a 14-34 (megarange) freewheel. On an e-bike, it hardly ever seems worth changing the chainring, so I tend to keep it on the middle ring for rolling along 95% of the time. If I want to go...

    Selling and Buying Second-hand e-bikes

Agreed - I was valuing bike and battery separately too. I won't add any more to this thread as I don't think we are disagreeing about much and agreeing on the main points!

    Selling and Buying Second-hand e-bikes

Those numbers are fine as far as they go but don't factor in the genuine improvements that Wisper has made which also need to be adjusted for. For example on my 2007 bike the rear brake disintegrated before I used it - had to replace - and I had to spend a Sunday afternoon making a torque...

Front wheel traction on steep hills with front hub motor

I've just been out for a very pleasant, leisurely ride on my wife's Tongxin bike, partly to test it out a bit more and partly because it was so nice out. I sought out the steepest hills I know of near to me in west London, which are in Harrow. I measured the steepest of the hills - a road...

    Selling and Buying Second-hand e-bikes

That's a very sensible way of looking at it. When I sold my old Wisper I used a similar approach to get to an asking price. One question: is it really right to base the valuation on the original price of the bike? Taking Flecc's 'hypothetical' example, let's say that the bike in...

    Decent bike with off-road option

I don't disagree with that - always wise when pricing any second hand e-bike to add in the cost of getting a new battery.

    Threaded type rear hub gears

Well done to Danny for finding a supplier of those 13T ones. It is only 1 tooth but it will give you that higher gear that the Powacycle is crying out for, as well as the climbing gear (that it is also crying out for!) If I were you, given they are pretty cheap, I would buy a spare, just in...

    The 100 Mile Challenge

Nick, Sounds great fun. I am tempted, but a bit scared of that red drop-handlebar / Crystalyte beast with which you vanquished allcomers at Presteigne!

    Decent bike with off-road option

I don't want to go over it all again but just to reassure MyMotion, and anyone else looking to buy a second hand Wisper, here are the highlights: The minor wiring fault (one wire from the controller was connected to the wrong plug) affected pedelec mode only. It made the pedelec mode keep...

    Decent bike with off-road option

Sorry Flecc, of course you are correct about the battery on an early Wisper 905 SE being likely to have deteriorated by now, but I must correct the comments about 905 SEs imported from Germany being different from those which Wisper sold in the UK at the time! There was some utter nonesense...

    My wife's new Tongxin bike

A thought I've had too, Andy, and I do have a 260rpm rear wheel hanging up in my garage! But I've not done it yet because I think it would end up being too heavy and moped-like, and I don't think that plays to the strengths of the Tongxin. It would be heavy because it would need two...
