    Bafang bbs01b and Hailong battery

The Boardman hybrid frames have the bolts on 65mm centres which is exactly the centre of the slots on the Hailong case. The holes in the frame aren’t high enough up by about 65mm. The correct way to install the case is with the output aperture/cables pointing down. In that position only one of...

    Flux

I experimented using actual nickel and found soldering it quite satisfactory without flux, thanks for that. An xt90 connector which was always difficult to solder also was relatively easy. So, thanks again.

    Derailleur with 65 mm chainline

Yes, that’s it, the TCR advanced and Giant now rings a bell Without the Origin8 spacer, the cage of a 2sp is correct for a 50mm chainline. The spacer is 16.5mm which will therefore give a 65mm chainline. I don’t need the spacer nor a spare TCR adaptor. Are these of any use? I found the...

    Flux

I looked under one of my battery packs and where I’d soldered the BMS wires to the nickel strip welded to the batteries, there is brown-ish crud around the solder joint. Looking this up I discovered that the flux I use (standard ScrewFix stuff) might not be the best! Indeed, add a little water...

    Derailleur with 65 mm chainline

I tried the same and ran into the same insurmountable problem that there is no direct fit derailleur that takes anything above a 42t chain ring. It’s just trouble all the way. However, having bought an Origin8 direct mount adaptor (same as your ProblemSolvers?), a normal braze on derailleur can...

    choosing a doner.

I’m an admirer of dveh’s botte batteries. If you can’t make one, you can buy good reliable ones. It’s the small size that’s attractive; fits anything securely and cheap enough to keep one as spare. I’m building a pack with 70 cells which weighs 3.5kgs and it’s difficult, to say the least...

Cheapest viable conversion? (not including battery)

The difference between ebay “easylivingus” and Whoosh and others is that they earn their living off bikes whereas this character very definitely doesn’t. Even for £100 I’d not touch it.

Possible build Dahon Expresso and Tongsheng TSDZ2B

A 48v 750w motor with all the bits, throttle etc, will cost to buy £250-260. When “tax is paid” you’ll separately pay the shipper when it lands in the U.K. £35+-£5 for handling charges; otherwise you’ll pay vat on the declared value of £110 + £10 for handling which comes to about the same as the...

Hi guys, old man's attempt at getting fit!

D8veh’s solution must work. Unfortunately once allowed to loosen the taper will deform. If I were you I’d try kitchen foil first and push the crank onto a single layer of it. I had read of this problem and for the first couple of weeks i battered mine on which, touch wood, hasn’t failed.

dahon folder conversion - fast and light

I had to work quite hard with my TSDZ2 motors to silence them. Success made it easier to drive especially without power. I suspected the torque anchor could distort the BB and also they require “running in” ie several hundred miles! So I disagree with your assertion of significant drag. I can...

dahon folder conversion - fast and light

Regarding the angle that a TSDZ2 is set, i often have the bike upside down running the motor through the throttle or pedals. The orientation doesn’t matter. And a throttle requires a VLDC5 display (larger one), the bus wire HIGO connector from the motor has to have 2 pins more (for the throttle)...

Tonsheng tsdz2 fitted to old Dawes hybrid

Take the plate with the 35mm hole which is the one you’re hoping to add a lock nut to and, with a good quality sharp chisel, cut into the plate radially off the 35mm hole and form little ridges - you want to push the metal out with the chisel. What you want to happen is that when you tighten the...

dahon folder conversion - fast and light

Are you thinking of just folding the bike and onto the train, storing it as luggage? There’s some really careless people whose luggage could damage the hub control cable. The Dahon bikes aren’t, or were not, very stable when folded, not on mine anyway. Have you travelled on 20” wheels at +20mph...

tonsheng tsdz2 fitted to orbea carpe

I’m doing the same but with an almost identical looking bike, Boardman hybrid comp! i’ve installed a 750w 48v TSDZ2 into a Giant Cypress hybrid which is a not too heavy old bike which handles well, is comfortable to ride, but the V brakes aren’t up to the motor, hence the Boardman. To improve...

Hi guys, old man's attempt at getting fit!

Bitsnpcs I’d buy, £20 or so, a 150 watt constant current electronic load to test the discharge capacity. Set the discharge at about 3.5amps. There are a few YouTube videos of how to use them. That will give you a decent tool to find what’s going on. These come from Aliexpress as do the ANNPOWER...

Hi guys, old man's attempt at getting fit!

I’ve bought several 36v BMS and all have had some problem or other, not just because the 10S5P pack had a diverse range of capacities. However one made by a Chinese Cpy ANNPOWER was very successful as is their 48v equivalent. They also sell 2a and 4a chargers - not cheap but good. They...

Possible build Dahon Expresso and Tongsheng TSDZ2B

I’m eating my words here but whilst travelling along Killhorse Lane near Ludlow the gradient was such that I was able to experiment. If you’re going fast enough the power reduces which encourages you to go up a gear. Whereas going down a gear will increase assistance if near to stalling. TDSZ2...

As of last week, such a motor will be charged vat plus a handling fee of about £10. So expect another £32 on top
