Says the person who just stated - incorrectly - that the European Commissioners are elected into their positions.
  2. OxygenJames

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Wrong. They are nominated by their government - or to be precise - they are proposed by the Council of the European Union, on the basis of suggestions made by the national governments. Not elected.

Danny deciding attack is the best form of defence. The Queen Danny - the monarchy - I mean - look it up - we live in a Parliamentary democracy. Sure she has the appearance of power and titles up the gazoo. But. She has no actual power. She is a figurehead.

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Wrong. All current members of the Cabinet are also MPs. Here is the full list:

What? She has no actual power. Is that your way out of the corner you got yourself in? I expected better than that.

Quango posts do not have the power the EU commissioners have!

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Right. That's what I thought. We obviously figured it was a bad idea to have the top jobs allocated to people who had not won an actual election.

    Brexit, for once some facts.

It sucks. You're right. But it would suck even worse if the cabinet had as much if not more power than the PM - AND they were not elected in the first place (which is the situation with the EU commissioners).

So I was right - they are not actually elected. The EU commissioners. Boris won an actual election (meaning Jo Public voted for him) - none of the EU commissioners did. THAT was my point.

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Maybe thats the problem. Seeing as the commission is arguably the most powerful institution at the EU. So to compare the commission's members to the cabinet - that ain't such a good comparison. None of them had to go on local radio. Or door walk. Or stand up at the town hall and convince...

Are you telling me there are currently cabinet ministers who are not MPs?

    Brexit, for once some facts.

If I am right (again correct me if I am wrong in the post above) - then THIS is the problem with the EU - we didn't actually get to vote for those people - its not real democracy - its too distant. No wonder only thirty something percent bother turning out to vote.
  13. OxygenJames

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Whoa - back up a moment Danny. They are 'elected' by the members - but not by the people. No actual people voted for them - just the people who the people voted for. So a sort of second hand voted for. They never had to stand up in front of a live audience at their town hall - or door...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Farage is not head of the EU commission or whatever Juncker is head of.

But how are you going to do that without 'quotas' and the like? Equality of opportunity I am all for - but I am absolutely opposed to equality of outcome - and it sounds to me like that's what you're after. It just so happens that 97.2% of logging workers in the US are male. Are you...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Yes me thinks Zlatan's slight problem may well be an implicit goal of equality of outcome. Equality of outcome is a terrible type of equality. Its like saying any profession should have the same % of members of any group as a proportion that they exist in the group itself. So for example...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

To be a cabinet minister you have to be elected as an MP. Some of the top posts at the EU - correct me if I am wrong - the people have not been elected AT ALL. Like I say - I could be wrong - but that is my understanding.

    Brexit, for once some facts.

The trouble is his offer - as I understand it - means a permanent customs union. And so far as I also understand it - that's something May doesn't want to entertain because she knows that we all know - that that simply isn't Brexit - and she knows we (ie the 52%) will never buy that it is.

He is infuriating for sure - but there are holes in the tarp of his defence mechanism (I sense he has a keen sense of humour for example). He will at times allow an idea in and it is sometimes possible to engage him constructively. But don't expect him to change. That's a fools game.

I'd say Europe as a whole (and that includes us though it would be worse if we stay in the EU) - is on a downward trajectory. China is the rising sun. Germany is close to going into recession - they can not continue with their export led economy when the credit is starting to dry up and people...
