    Size of the market.

Thanks, Flecc, for finding the link to that old post for me! David, I've found two other data points since that post: 1. I looked at the accounts of Ultima Networks, the holding company for PowaCycle, and they pretty imply their electric bike revenue in 2006 was £5-600k. They sell...

Taking the back wheel off a Windsor

Carl (or anyone else), My wife now has a Powacycle Windsor, which she is very pleased with. I'd like to upgrade the tyres. The front was no problem but the back looks a little complicated with the electric cable going in to the motor and little play in the cable. How do I disconnect it...

How many electric bikes do you see out on the roads?

Saw a Giant Suede the other day parked outside a bike shop near to the London Dungeon. Nothing else on the West London commuter run for a couple of weeks. Frank

Analysis of electric bike usage in China

Miles, A fascinating article. Thanks for posting it. The single most interesting fact for me was the comparison of the operating costs of 3ebikes and other forms of transport, which show them being the cheapest, even compared to a normal bicycle. The note at the end gives the explanation...

Light, fastest, climbs mountains, and pretty efficient

I read this late last night which was a bad idea as I've been dreaming about bike possibilities half the night! If the objective is to get a bike that does both 'fast on the flat' and 'steep hill climbs', I rather like prState's initial suggestion. The most obvious enhancement to me would...

    A to B has new top-rated bike

I was browsing the AtoB web site last night and saw that they have a new 5-star bike at the top of their rankings, the Gazelle Easy Glider. I don't know much about it other than their description. It's clearly a crank-mounted motor, drive through the gears, pedelec set-up in the manner of the...

    Anyone heard of sustaincycles

I agree that there is some sense in what Jim is saying, but it is not very elegant for the 50cycles guys to be slagging off the competition in this way, especially with apparently no evidence! That's not the way to grow the market, or to build the premium brand needed to underpin their own...

    Attaching things to the rack

I'm glad its not only me! I've cycled around for most of my life with loose back lights attached to my carrier with an oversized fixing. I can't offer a solution, only moral support, but would love to hear if you find one! Frank

    Lithium Ion

David, Thanks for your reply. I appreciate your willingness to engage with us on this subject. I don't have any reason to doubt that your lithium batteries are at least as good as those used by other bike manufacturers. Given the higher capacity (13.8Ah) they may well be better...

    Nickel Prices

I'm currently doing some work that invovled looking at price trends in stainless steel, of which nickel is a key additive. I came across historic price information for Nickel, which shows prices soaring in 2006 but declining from a peak around May this year by almost 50%. This gives some...

How many electric bikes do you see out on the roads?

After not having seen any other electric bikes in a few months of commuting to central london, I've spotted two Ezees in the last week! A Torq last Friday at Hyde Park Corner and a Sprint on Tuesday on the Embankment. Frank

    Giant Lafree battery charging

From what I've read (all written by you I think, Flecc!) I'm pretty sure it's the charger; he told me the battery had been charged regularly about once a month while he'd had it.

    Giant Lafree battery charging

Thanks Flecc, I've been reading your site and also your previous post on here while you posted that reply! I think as the first step I'll be giving Mr Vita Electric a call in the morning...! Frank

    Giant Lafree battery charging

When I put my Lafree battery on to charge, after a few minutes it goes from the red light illuminated, meaning 'charging' to the slow blinking meaning 'fully charged' However the battery (which was fully discharged) is only showing 1 light, indicating it has hardly charged at all. Does...

    Giant Lafree battery connection question

Thanks, Flecc. I shall get round to doing it at some point, and post how it works. I've read through your site a few times and will definately have a go at recelling when the time comes to do that. The battery is actually 4 years old but it does seem to be holding decent charge. From...

    Giant Lafree battery connection question

I got a new bike yesterday! I managed to find a Lafree. The chap at Vita Electric, the dealer in Hampstead, was selling off his demonstration model, so I decided to buy it and took delivery yesterday. It performed well on the ride home. Battery handled the c.10 mile trip with plenty left...

    905se

David, Thanks for getting back to me. My concerns on Lithium batteries come from reading on this forum and in A to B magazine. They are: 1. Cut out on hills. Because the voltage of a lithium battery drops under loading, it can sometimes trigger a cutout. As peak loading occurs when...

What's in a Name? Or, We Want Our Name Back!

Stuart, I don't think we should try to reclaim 'moped'. As Flecc (I think) makes out earlier in the thread, the fact that it is enshrined in law to mean a different class of vehicle would make it very hard. We'd need an act of Parliament! However, should moped be nominated and win the...

What's in a Name? Or, We Want Our Name Back!

We need a process! There’s clearly no shortage of creativity around here! If we are serious about a branding makeover, what we need is a process. Here’s an idea. We set up a poll (ideally ask Russ to do it so its more official). First everyone who is interested can each nominate one...

    Throttle usage

My Powabyke has a throttle that works instantly and allows the amount of power to be varied (although you need to get it going to about 2mph on starting). I've tried both Ezee and Wisper, and they worked the same way (but would work from standstill if asked to do so). Frank
