That is a legal 250W bike.

    250w vs 500w

£3000? Illegal e-bikes are usually quite cheap. Which specific e-bike you have in mind? Then buy 250W bike. Surprisingly 250W motor can be more powerful than 500W.

I think you misunderstood. Last thing they want is you to pop in with your e-bike and show everybody you can do it better for less than half price. ;)

Electric conversion kit or peddle assist

It won't be legal. Consider TSDZ8 from Woosh. More or less the same power, but legal.

Electric conversion kit or peddle assist

Yes, me too. ...but 250W limit is on motors rated power, not on power output or input. So as long as motor is rated 250W you can use all the power you want (within reason) For example I expect your motor can deliver quite a punch. I am not a big fan of Bafang motors, so I am only guessing here...

By all means - stay legal. Remember - law does not restrict power. I just thought you might like to be more adventurous - try new motors, new controllers, more power - just explore. No point to run in circles.

Help! Is an Electric Bike Suitable for Long Mountain Rides?

Not necessarily. Prices of mid drives (and batteries) went down last year. Mid motors are much more accessible now.

    Is this bike any good?

Bike is ancient. I wouldn't buy, but £300 is OK...ish. This bike is really better than your earlier bikes?

What are you trying to do? Upgrade brakes on your bike? What bike? What brakes are there already? https://www.merlincycles.com/disc-brake-guide.html Quite often rotors on front wheel are bigger, because front wheel provide more stopping power. F180 R160 means front rotor is 180mm and rear is...

Yes. They are rather for use as intended (non electric). I will try to buy one for my son, but first need to convince authorities.

BTW Pauls has some interesting offers on full sus bikes, but not ideal for conversions. https://www.paulscycles.co.uk/bikes/mountain-bikes/full-suspension-mtb https://www.paulscycles.co.uk/bikes/mountain-bikes/rocky-mountain-element-a10-full-suspension-mountain-bike-blackgrey__9113

Very tempting, but it probably would cost me much more in the end than buying whole bike. Luckily 26" wheels are to small for my liking. Can't have same wheels as my 10 years old daughters, can I? ;) Also ancient geometry, but for road use it is a great buy.

No retro style, cost no more than $1500, any good recommendations?

It is a range, not speed. Very questionable on 9Ah battery BTW.
