    E-Bike Type Approval

??? Wisper who supply 250LPMs use the bicycle frame number as the VIN, which the inspectors accept. You don't need a VIN from the DVLA, be careful what you do or you'll end up with it needing registration and a number plate. .

    E-Bike Type Approval

Following Stuart's answer, Type Approval law exempts EAPCs from being motor vehicles, they remain bicycles. When the 250LPM class was introduced the DfT said they will be treated as EAPCs in all respects. Put those together and any vehicle inspector demanding lights be fitted should be...

    E-Bike Type Approval

None of that applies. You are reading the MSVA mnual which has this header note: "This file may not be suitable for users of assistive technology." There's a simplified set of rules for 250LPM, which are treated as bicycles by the DfT, which of course do not have to have any lights if only...

Agree with Stuart, a UK supplier is preferable even if slightly more expensive. A company like Woosh who supply kits as well as complete pedelecs will always look after you and give helpful conversion advice if the need arises. .

Understood, it is an unusual situation if genuine. Some might be scared to buy it in case it's jinxed and they too instantly drop dead!! But joking apart, I still wouldn't touch a illegal new pedelec, especially as that private sale has no supplier warranty or support. .

Why is so much illegal 'commuting' not policed ?

I think the answer is in politics, just like so many other evils. A recap on how we got here with e-scooters: Boris Johnson as PM desperately wanted a trade deal with the USA at the time of Donald Trump saying "America First", decoded as "no chance". But a couple of US companies were anxious...

Is that from a genuine source? They seem to be about £1500 from all the sources I've seen, including Amazon. However, I'd advise you stick to a legal pedelec, especially since your requirement seems undemanding, use of pavements, legal speeds, health problems etc. .

Partially agree, but it still leaves most of the criminality connected to Cocaine and Heroin addictions. So I say countries should choose which way. Full legalisation of supply or maximum penalty. Both can work. .

That's even worse, if circa 150 kilos of rider perched high up on the upright trike. You'll see when you ride it, ok at low speeds but can get very scary into turns as speed rises. .

    scout trike

Many people simply cannot get used to steering an upright trike, especially true of experienced cyclists. It's the reversed steering combined with the sensation of tipping they are unable to adjust to. On a normal bike which banks, we subconciously steer slightly away from the turn to allow...

    scout trike

Best leave it as it is, six lowish gears is plenty. Narrow based trikes like this are notoriously unstable, tipping on turns at the slightest excuse. .

The French know how to deal with this, the latest change in their pedelec regulations is a penalty of up to €30,000 for breaching the rules. That's eye watering enough to really focus minds and get compliance. .

Soundwave is confusing you with irrelevancies. The position in technical document ruling EN15194 is that the motor has to have a nominal rating of no more than 250 watts continuous maximum. But that doesn't mean they can't produce more for lesser periods than continuous. In practice they...

Sorry, but you do need a lecture in the law. There is no such thing as an e-bike. There are 250 watt pedelecs restricted to maximum 15.5 mph assistance, known in regulations as EAPCs, (Electric Assist Pedal Cycles). In roads law they are still classed as bicycles, so the riding on pavements...

The reason it isn't enforced is that Cyclists can ride on the pavement in some circumstances, details quoted below. Read right through to the end, showing this still applies: "On 1st August 1999, new legislation came into force to allow a fixed penalty notice to be served on anyone who is...

I think Johnson and all who supported him were in the firing line from many directions. I note one senior Tory also implied yesterday that the civil service may have been putting the boot in too behind the scenes. They have far more influence than many realise and they really dislike...
