    Brexit, for once some facts.

So it wasn't a colossal failure if it deterred the Ukrainians from taking it out early enough to prevent Russia's southern success! Of course propaganda doesn't physically defend anything, there is no such thing as a bridge that is attack proof, especially one as long and vulnerable as that...

Excuses, excuses. Read my reply to Oyster just above showing the other aspects of Ukraines ineptitude in the South. Yes, Russia made a complete mess of invading the North. I know it hurts you to admit it, but the roles were reversed in the South with Russia getting it very right. Ukraine in...

As ever the simple answer is the right one, the Ukrainians were inept in three ways in the south. Firstly by thinking Russia would open the attack there through Donbass and putting all their eggs in that basket, Russia didn't. Secondly by thinking an attack from Crimea would be too difficult...

Yes I've been staggered that Ukraine didn't attack this immediately on the start of the conflict. You may remember that when we first started this discussion I posted a photo and map of it showing how vulnerable it is. Here's the link to that post from 22nd February, TWO DAYS BEFORE Russia...

Trouble is it figured so long ago yet so few noticed. When he first became London Mayor in 2008 and appointed four of his buddies to senior posts, all had to be sacked very quickly. Two were criminals with records making them totally unsuited to their posts and the others fouled up very soon. .

Yes it had two C batteries for that, called U11 back in those days of course. The 67.5 volt sat along the base of the radio and the C's at the end. .

Help! Cheap bike with cruiser handlebars and battery on downtube

Ezee electric bikes make the classic style Sprint model with the advantage of an old style rear of seat post battery, not on the rack. This style pushes the carrier further back so better for mounting a child seat. It's also got a slightly swept back handlebar which might suit, 26" wheels too...

Indeed. About that time I even bought a new portable radio that only had a pair of OC72 germanium transistors in the output stage. The RF side was handled by valves with an Everready 67.5 volt battery supplying the HT. Like a PP3 on steroids!

Which is why it won't happen, governments don't make these technical decisions. As I said above, I'm sure we'll do as we did last time with a continuous running cuts program, meaning a relatively stable demand pattern. .

We'll probably take the Covid approach again. Wait until it really happens to see if there is a problem. Then when we see there really is a problem, panic and run around like headless chickens implementing excessive measures. .

Similar with me, I had a 19" GEC colour TV that could probably have fried an egg with the heat it gave off. Incidentally the Baird name on that TV was a fake. Two of our TV makers, Baird and Murphy, were failing in the face of competition and Radio Rentals bought the two names to use on the...

TVs too, the 1960s and '70s cathode ray TVs were greedy beasts that helped heat rooms. Fridges back then were greedy too, so saving through the 24 hours on those. Lots of people didnt have timers on immersion heaters, just relying on the thermostat, so the cuts saved high current at all times...

There's lots of guessing going on that's not worth taking any notice of. Few people today remember or have ever known what happened in the 1970s when we had a very successful cuts program. I'm sure we we won't be having 3 hour cuts, that's too long and creates wastage as you've remarked. The...

That would be the Taliban then. Attacked for a decade by most of NATO, including the world's most militarily powerful nation, the Taliban sent them all packing and then strolled back into government. Just as they did long ago with Russia. We should sub contract Britain's defence to them, I...

What to do when your mid drive bike give up the ghost

It's an old question, but the answer is that no company has ever made one. There would need to be a model for each type of proprietary crank motor, two or three for each model of Panasonic, Bosch, Yamaha, Impulse at least. But the trouble is there would be hardly any demand. Almost...

Agreed, it's by far the electorate who are the real problem, and not just the tories. Here in London we were lumbered with TWO terms of Boris Johnson as mayor, not because he was ever Londoners popular choice but simply because the complacent great majority of Labour "supporters" twice couldn't...

As well, yes, but my emphasis was on the USA's rejection of not just communism but any hint of socialism, which I view as bigotry. Ask Obama! Yes Russia has its hawks, just as the USA has, so in both it could never be said that the related ambitions cease. But it remains a fact that the...

I don't agree with your analysis. While Russian leadership has been intermittently fascist in nature, I think you accord that far too much importance. Russia's very harsh past has resulted in the people needing very strong leadership to keep order, Russians are far from being natural democrats...
