The ideal fix is to replace the disk and yes, you will need to remove the chainwheel crank arm. You can, once the crank arm is pulled, wrap enough black electrical tape around the axle and work the disk over it so it turns with the axle again.

Check the gap between the magnet disk and the pick up. Should be less than 5mm. As well, make sure the disk is turning with the crank. The plastic teeth that grip the axle sometimes break.

All of the data that appears on the display, when the bike is on, comes from the motor. The button battery is not rechargable to my knowledge.

I do not believe that the button battery is rechargeable.

The above cut off resistance of crank drives is negligible. Having proper tyre pressurse and cycling in the correct gear will affect resisitance much more.

Knowing this, I would try swapping the display mount from the bike that works. A lot of work but it will narrow down the cause. A new motor is not cheap out of warranty but not as expensive as a new bike. Glad I could help, good luck. Cheers
