    What climbs steep hills slowly?

If you don't want to pedal then motorbike or scooter is your best option. These are called ebikes not eScooters for reason. Any mid drive with low enough gearing will get you up a 15% hill sweat free with some pedalling. For real hill climbing ability you can't beat Bosch CX drive, 30% are well...

    Kalkoff

Just because CX is more powerful doesn't make it better, for MTBing yes, for road maybe not. I find gentler power delivery of Shimano STEPs(active equivalent) Eco mode better than CX on road. Lot comes down to rider and what you want out of drive. Once you narrow in on drive or bike, do along...

    £5k to spend

Emtb magazine, the latest issue (free) has test of 11 £5k MTBs. http://ebike-mtb.com/en/ For MTBing 15mph cutoff is not an issue. Climbing it will be terrain that keeps you <15mph. Downhill, keep off the brakes. On flats look around and enjoy the outdoors.

    Bosch Crank Drive - Unimpressed

I've found power delivery to be very smooth and predictable in lower settings eg eco & tour, same goes for Shimano Steps. My limited experiences of hub drive with on/off throttle in tight situations was enough to decide on STEPS drive. The Bosch definitely has higher pedal resistance when...

    Country lane commute options

While mid drive might wear through drive train components quicker than hub. The weekly maintenance of cleaning and oiling chains is same for both drive systems. With 9spd chain and cassettes parts are cheap for Captus.

Bosch CX question for a newbie.

R&M do CX with Rohloff but they are in totally different price bracket. Shimano needs to upgrade their hubs to handle MTB drives (70nm+), currently only rated for 50nm STEPs and Active drives.

    Cube Stereo Hybrid

On the rear derailleur there is plastic level, this is clutch which when engaged (lies flat) puts extra tension on chain. Disengage it (reduces tension on chain) when removing wheel. Make sure you have it engage for off road, it will stop chain suck if chain dries out or gets muddy. Trust me you...

Which bike will completely replace my car

For commuting hub drives are cheaper to maintain than crank drives. Crank drives are hard on chains and cassettes as all power goes though drive train. The are two sensing options cadence and torque, they feel quite different. I suggest you try both and see which you prefer.

    Country lane commute options

If like Bosch Active try a Shimano Steps powered bike, there is not a lot between the two drive systems. Go for bike with intregrated lights, they may cost more than battery powered after market lights but make big difference if using bike daily.

Change from Active to Performance CX

Daniel hasn't stated what bike it is. If it is Cube I'm surprised he is having trouble on hills unless they are very steep. Our Shimano Steps has same gearing. Fitting 13-14t chainring may require different locking nut. 11-40t cassette is best bet assuming derailleur will take it. Larger steps...

Change from Active to Performance CX

This is cheapest option. Replacing engine sprocket is simplest and cheapest option, go for 15t. If you have 9spd derailleur (typically 11-34 or 11-36) sunrace do 11-40, see Amazon. The tradeoff is slightly lower climbing speed. Our Shimano steps (active equivalent) has equivalent of 15t...
