    I see your cheating then!

Gave my son's MTB school group and parents ago in weekend. Most had same question about how to make it go. Kids were converts, they are all about going downhill, climbs are a necessary evil which eBikes make fun. The parents all came back impressed but maybe not all converts.

    Cube Reaction versus Cross Hybrid

£200 is worth it alone for air shock, with added bonus of top end gears. At £2200 you will have excellent hard tail, capable of doing it all, touring, commuting and advanced MTB tracks. Allow for new chain every 1000miles, new cassette and chainring every 2000miles. A service of shock and...

    Cube Reaction versus Cross Hybrid

The components are far from bargain basement, unlike some ebike manufacturers that don't even bother (or more likely ashamed) to state there components on spec sheets. Deore are good mid range shifters, they've given me 1000s km over 15yrs of trouble free operation. The M355 ( version of M315)...

Does the bike I need exist at the right price...

With crank drive especially you need quality gears, Deore, SLX, XT in that order of quality. The Acera on Haibike are entry level. Recently swapped wife's 1yr old Acera derailleur for 10yr along Deore I had, made huge improvement. Shifts were lighter, faster and positive, still not quite as good...

Raleigh Motus or Giant Prime E+2 ?

Word caution regarding pannier bags, don't put wallets or keys in them when riding. We lost a bag recently when riding over rough ground, luckily an honest person found it and tracked us down. From now my keys and wallet stay on my person in zipped pocket or backpack.

    Help me choose please!

The cube is good buy. Components are well specced for what you need it for. Deore are good midrange shifters. The brakes are lower end but a excellent when matched with 180mm disks and should prove reliable. An air fork would be nice but at this price you can't have everything. Most importantly...

Brand new Haibike, two broken chains in first 35 miles, and other problems, advice needed

I matched new chain against old original, assume it was right length. Not sure if I checked direction when fitting.

I've got a tranz X ebike with no battery...

If bike was legitimate, why was it sold without battery and charger. Without purchase receipts I'm guessing stolen goods.

Sad to hear about you new bike teething problems. On plus side a lot of readers and I have learnt a lot about chains. I now need to check 10spd Shimano chain I fitted recently to manual bike.

    Evans promoting e-bikes?

Just introduced 20 teenagers and theirs parents (school MTB club ride) to ebikes today. They all gave my bike quick ride at end of day. One fit long distance adult ride took 1sec to decide there was one in his future. Most of kids can also see one in their distant future.

    eMTB purchase

With eMTB the only way to go is factory mid drives eg Bosch, Yamaha, Brose, Shimano E8000. There are hardtails using Shimano Steps E6000 drive but it is lower powered and only rated for light off road. Manufacturers Haibike, KTM, Giant, Specialized, Scott, Trek, Cube and Merida. At £2000 a...

Looking for affordable step-through to commute up-hill

As you have found out there is no substitute for doing test rides. Suggest you try Bosch or Shimano STEPs mid drive bike, they are out if your price range but are a totally different experience.

    Simple question

You can add harder to clean to that list. I've experience chain wrap twice now when forgot to engage XT derailleur clutch.

Anyone ever towed a trailer with either NuVinci or Rolfoff hub

300lbs is big ask of any drive train. The SRAM 3spd would give you low gearing but may not handle that much load, Rohloff should be up to it, combined with 14-15t chainring. If fitting new hub, would pay to get wheel rebuilt with stronger spokes and rim.

Anyone ever towed a trailer with either NuVinci or Rolfoff hub

Which Bosch drive (active, performance, CX) do you have? Haibike Trekking bike uses a Performance drive with SRAM 3spd hub with 9spd cassette and has been reliable with couple that clocked up 20,O00+ km, towing 35kg trailers. No hill defeated them. This SRAM 3spd has advantage that it uses...

Options for transporting ebike by car

It is weight rating of your towbar you need to worry about. If buying fork shape type rack, get one with strap that clips under top of boot/hatch door. This stops bouncing of rack back and fore which will stress towbar. Buy one size larger than you need eg 3 bike if carrying 2, gives more...
