    ASA ebike dongles

Regenerative braking would largely redress this matter if enabled, although IMO, rim brakes have no place on an ebike.

Need help choosing an appropriate kit for long ride

This just demonstrates the often arbitrary 'ratings' that motors (and controllers for that matter) are given. Around 1300W is required to maintain 30mph and I've never found a 1000W DD motor that couldn't maintain 30mph indefinitely without overheating. I've never experienced a 500W DD motor...

Need help choosing an appropriate kit for long ride

Okay, that changes things somewhat. I definitely misinterpreted your original post and thought you wanted to travel faster. 20mph isn't fast enough to take advantage of a direct drive motor, so now I would recommend a geared hub motor for your commute instead.

To the OP: How fast are you wanting to travel?

Need help choosing an appropriate kit for long ride

My DD Xlyte H3540 3kW hardtail build weighs about 40kg and I can say for sure that the weight isn't an issue while I'm on tarmac or smoother hardpack trails.

Need help choosing an appropriate kit for long ride

I took the OP’s requirements as high speed cruising with little to no climbing, for which a DD motor is best suited. Efficiency should be pretty good in this scenario and weight not really an issue for road use. V-brakes could be a problem though for any high milage bike.

Need help choosing an appropriate kit for long ride

Okay, fortnightly might be somewhat overstating the situation, but 200 high speed miles every week will have the OP replacing chains and cassettes fairly frequently. Sorry, but i can only see the downsides of a crank drive here and all without needing any of the advantages that a crank drive offers.

Need help choosing an appropriate kit for long ride

Your requirements sound perfect for a direct drive hub motor with their high speed efficiency and bulletproof reliability. Definitely steer clear of crank drive unless you relish the though of a fortnightly maintenance schedule.

bosch warranty with 2nd hand motors

I did just purchase a replacement motor, so definitely relevant.

bosch warranty with 2nd hand motors

I'm someone who would never buy an Apple product either. Maybe that tells you more than I could explain about my dislike of this policy. All this is silly really since they never insisted I returned the old knackered motor in my Bosch drill when I purchased a new one outside of warranty.

bosch warranty with 2nd hand motors

It doesn't matter why and it's none of their business. I just do. Hypothetically speaking. This is just a flavour of the type of policy that Bosch insists on enacting that totally puts me off.

bosch warranty with 2nd hand motors

Definitely a case of "their ball, their rules". It's policies such as this that stops me from ever recommending a bike with a Bosch system to anybody.

bosch warranty with 2nd hand motors

Tenuous at the very least. If a motor is 'purchased' as you state, what right do Bosch have to demand the old motor back first? Surely once you've purchased it, it's yours to do as you wish.

    Hydraulic Disc brakes

There are two areas that you'll experience improvements with by upgrading to hydraulic brakes: Hydro brakes require no adjustment once set up, unlike mechanical brakes that require a certain amount of fettling as the pads wear and the cable/sleeve stretches. Hydro brakes enable a much higher...

    Seriously!

I'm not sure I've ever fitted a kit and NOT had to change a connector or two. If it's the biggest hurdle you'll have to face fitting this one, I'd say its a success.

    Weird failure, any ideas?

This sounds like a problem I had a couple of years back with a sensorless controller. All tests proved inconclusive until I tested the controller with a brushless motor tester which revealed a screwed up phase timing. I never discovered the cause, but replacing the controller solved the issue...

What a pointless exercise! What would you expect a real scammer to say? They certainly aren't going to tell you anything other than what you want to hear. I'm being blunt here, I know, but if you called me as a retailer to discuss the possibility of me scamming you, I'd tell you to "do one". As...

Brompton motors - rims requiring drilling out

15 motors!!! That's no more than a 10 minute job including de-burring. A DIY task if ever I heard one. Surely there's somebody around capable of doing it (even an UNTRAINED chimp could manage it). In all seriousness though, I can't see a semi-competent general purpose odd-job man/woman screwing...
