Erratic Electric problem with my Bearprint.

Once again I have to jump in and sing the praises of the Tonaro system It is nothing like the Bosch or Panasonic. The thottle gives full power at all times and in all gears. There is no phasing down, and if the speed restrictor magnet is moved on the back wheel, it will go up to about 16-17 mph...

    All this knowledge.

I have been intrigued by the idea. I went into a local bike shop and they told me, 'Don't bring an electric bike here, we don't understand them' I thought that this was a bit short sighted on their part, there are plenty of electricians about and an enterprising bike shop owner could easily ask...

    Sorry Mate, I didn`t see you .

I read somewhere about a man who had been blind from birth and after an operation gained his eyesight. Not only was he prepared to get out of upstairs windows being unable to guage the height, but apparently, at a bus stop could not see the driver in the front of the bus because he had never...

Are the EU making a big mistake in limiting e-bikes to 25 Kg?

When I give the impression that older people want electric mopeds, I probably haven't expressed myself properly. What the few I have spoken to want is to be able to climb hills with no more physical effort than pedalling on the flat. If the weight of the battery is not taken into account, then...

Are the EU making a big mistake in limiting e-bikes to 25 Kg?

Yet again, a passer-by has asked me about my bike. Nearly all of them are over 60. Today, this man owned an e-bike that he paid £500 for. Swansea is very hilly and he complained that this bike of his will not go up the hills. He stated that his friends German bike (presumably a crank driver)...

    The biggest apples of all

Rolling resistance has always been of interest to me. I changed the Kenda off road tyres on my bike to Schwalbe City Jets, 26x 1.95. They are really huge and fill the space between mudguard and wheel. Strangely, their cross section seems to be much the same as the old Kenda 26x 2.25 These new...

DOGS - The Bane of my Life

An old motor cyclists trick that I used a couple of times back in the 1960's was if the dog was on your near side, just keep going at a speed to keep his head level with the back axle, (generally this can be up to 20mph), then go as close as possible to a car parked on your nearside, the dog...

DOGS - The Bane of my Life

I have got one of those new types of bell that only tings once, unlike the old 'kerang-kerang' type. I generally give a single ting about 50 yards away. Nobody has never complained and more than one has said 'Thank-you.' Probably because the lycras race past without warning. I was once riding a...

    Interesting design concept

The problem for the rear end to be strong enough is the need for massive amounts of steel, and thus a weight penalty. This concept is frankly ridiculous, it flies in the face of long established engineering principles regarding space frames and for what? A triumph of design over practicability...

Shock warning! Should we ask for Registration?

There seem to be two separate provisions here, 1 A number plate and ownership log book. 2 The ability to detect the bike using automatic number plate recognition equipment. If the plate is to be small and unobtrusive, ANPR equipment will not recognise it. (I remember seeing small plates on the...

    Thorn Raven now converted

Possibly not relevant, but I gave up on my carbon fibre fishing rod because unlike GRP, it seems to bend the same and then suddenly snap, whereas GRP starts to 'groan' Also, I have seen carbon fibre sailing dinghy masts snap, wooden masts just don't snap, alloy ones bend before snapping.

Shock warning! Should we ask for Registration?

Do we have a break down of the types of bikes that are stolen? And why? I guess that many are a casual 'take, ride and abandon' Others, the more expensive ones will be sold on. I imagine though, that if a Police Officer in a car saw a stolen bike, it would very hard if not impossible to catch...

Shock warning! Should we ask for Registration?

Your second paragraph is persuasive! Perhaps I will change my mind. As to severe sentences not working, I totally disagree. Leniency fails to bring home the full consequences of their actions to criminals. In effect, as the alcoholics say, it is enabling behaviour which only allows the criminal...

Shock warning! Should we ask for Registration?

Bike theft is a big problem in Holland also. I am not too sure whether this scheme would work. Unlike cars, bikes and motor cycles are not easy to catch when spotted. In Swansea, we have problems with youngsters riding stolen motor bikes on the open hill sides. They seem to keep these bikes...

    Somerset Beware

Well, I hope you are right. The problem is that if something awful happens, first of all newspaper feature writers will publish inaccurate allegations in general and while we are on the back foot trying to make our case, rag bag politicians like Willgabble Havequote MP will demand that the law...

    Somerset Beware

As far as I can see, if someone asks a supplier for a motor that will do 50mph, the fact that it is electric as opposed to petrol is inconsequential. They should be told that such a bike will have to registered, taxed, insured etc. The fact is that cycle parts are not really good enough for...
