Ebikes versus normal bikes for commuting

On the 9Ah battery, yes, especially if you're mainly on the flat. I'm guessing I'd get 20 miles out of my 8Ah Bosch system on high power settings, with a couple of hills. Although you've said you'd like to use full power, I do recommend using a mid-range setting if you can - it'll be a good mix...

Ebikes versus normal bikes for commuting

Maloflora, also consider whether bike weight is an issue for you. I've mentioned on another thread recently that I often have to pick up the bike to carry it up/down stairs at train stations - this is where excess weight can be a pain. My old Juicy came in, with a D-lock attached, at 23.5kg -...

Ebikes versus normal bikes for commuting

I'd have previously agreed with that - certainly it is a benefit of hub gears that they can be changed when stationary. But my current Shimano Deore derailleur gears are super-smooth, and a real joy to use. If I see a stop is imminent, I push hard on the down-trigger, and this drops down two...

BEBA UK Survey Results: Executive Summary

I agree that whether someone needs a throttle may have been overstated in some of the responses (or, as you say, possibly misinterpreted in the results). But, if I am reading you correctly, I think e-bike owners in general need to get away from the idea that this form of transport is only for...

Can Lithium batteries be sent by post?

Thanks all. Parcel Monkey looks pretty good, might give that a go. flecc - yes indeed: lots of polystyrene beads and air-pocket wrap!

Ebikes versus normal bikes for commuting

Good question about the range on a smaller battery. My old Juicy Sport (a sub-£1000 hub bike) with a 10Ah battery would do 10 miles on a charge, probably because I used to hang onto the throttle! If I'd just made do with the pedal sensor, I probably would have gotten 20+ miles out of that on a...

Ebikes versus normal bikes for commuting

Welcome to the forum, Maloflora. I'm 34, male and reasonably physically fit. I do a 10-mile round trip on an electric bike nearly every working day, plus another 10 or so per week for leisure and supermarket runs. I have a couple of reasonably big hills to deal with on my way to work, and the...

Can Lithium batteries be sent by post?

I'm planning to send a 10Ah Lithium battery via the Post Office, using the "Express 48" service, so I think it's actually ParcelForce. Are there any restrictions on sending these via various couriers in the UK? From the RM site: Do folks here use specific couriers? The chap I spoke to...

What bike test-drive policies do you have?

Both very good: I even bought one!

USB interface into Bosch crank computer?

Blew it, some enterprising German mechanics have found how to set up a standard Bosch system for off-road speeds. The basis is moving the magnetic sensor on the rear wheel so it reads the rotational speed of the crank instead, which can be some 30% of the wheel speed. The first video here is a...

USB interface into Bosch crank computer?

Hi all In some recent research, I found that diagnostic equipment for Bosch crank drive systems uses a USB interface. I'm inclined to think this is the case for the current style of handlebar computer (HMI), as well as the new kind featuring a USB socket. For the old kind, I speculate that...

Anyone need a Juicy Sport battery?

Hi Tom Again I suspect that the first enquirer will take it, unless the parcel delivery costs are too high. I should think such charges are unavoidable, so best to assume it's gone. However if it falls through, I'll get back to you and geostorm :)

    Oxygen eMate Race

I wonder if some e-bike suppliers will quietly ignore such customer enquiries, since they do not want to be seen condoning potentially illegal bike use. But as you say, if it's for off-road use, it's perfectly okay. It would be better if suppliers were to happily answer such questions but to...

Anyone need a Juicy Sport battery?

The battery is currently reserved - depending on whether the costs of sending aren't too high. Should that expression of interest fall through, I'll let you know.

    Initial thoughts on Ave XH-3

Thanks Eddieo, got a couple of No Mud mudguards coming my way. Found them cheap at the linked store, with only a pound for postage.

Fair point Eddieo, although my efforts would probably look quite tatty! I'd get it right on mudguard number 4 I suppose ;)

    Initial thoughts on Ave XH-3

Thanks d8veh. Out of interest, is your clearance between rear tyre and drilled strut also quite tight for your bikes? I wondered in my case whether the guard could be inserted in front of the strut (i.e. into the triangle) but some guards might be too wide for that.

Heh, yes - I took it out for an hour of light off-road today (a local park I mentioned, which has a lot more mud in it than my summer visit). Great fun! :D Yes, the clearance does look to be a problem, unless the guard could go in front of the strut. No probs, I'll give Eddieo's...

Bicycle Lasers to keep drivers at bay?

OldBob1, In bright city riding conditions I switch my Magic Shine front lamp to flashing, since even its 900 lumen output isn't so bright against streetlights. In dark streets where there is no street lighting, I switch back to steady lighting - otherwise it is difficult to see where I am...
