    Initial thoughts on Ave XH-3

Actually they look pretty good, to be fair. I'll see what Martin suggests, and I'll then have choices :)

Here's an angle view, with the strut a bit clearer:

Hi Martin :) Yes, it's drilled. Just taken a pic: As Eddieo says, there's a bit (maybe 10mm or so) of downtube before the quick-release bracket. As you say, the quick-release should be replaced anyway. I'll look forward to your solution involving the drilled strut!

    Opinions plse on SAD lamps

I'd have thought fluorescent lights don't contain the same frequency mix as daylight, which is what SAD lamps try to emulate. However if they put Scimitar on Cloud 9, it's gotta be worth a go :)

I think I might be in danger of answering my own question here! This must be what you're referring to, and it seems that yes, it goes on the seatpost, even though - as per the photo - it's on a quick-release seat. Since I have to lock mine in public (unavoidable on a commuter bike, sadly) would...

    Initial thoughts on Ave XH-3

Aha, I was going to ask about mudguards. The rear wheel is a problem, since there's a frame strut inside the top of the rear forks, which would seem to get in the way of a standard mudguard. I was told today by a LBS that my only solution would be to fix the mudguard to the seatpost. Since the...

    Opinions plse on SAD lamps

I've used 5-HTP (available at health-food shops, but expensive) to combat mild depression; it's a seratonin stimulant, I think. It seemed initially to have an effect, but in retrospect it may have been that I was taking an evening meal earlier to try it, which in turn substantially improved the...

Bicycle Lasers to keep drivers at bay?

I couldn't see from the external link a power rating for the laser diodes. Ineffective ones may be less than the generally accepted 1mW EU limit (see here) - if there were two green ones on this device, it may be okay even in car headlight!

    Initial thoughts on Ave XH-3

RobF, I've not heard of any wear problems associated with crank systems - I've calculated I need to have 31 months of trouble-free usage on the Ave to get a similar TCO to the Juicy! I've got 24 months warranty, and the German engineering and Japanese components will probably help. If I get any...

    Initial thoughts on Ave XH-3

Thanks Bob :) That sounds like an excellent range. As it happens, I am planning on recharging the Ave battery deliberately less often than the previous Juicy. With the old one, I recharged (pretty much) every night as a matter of course, and the battery is still going strong after 27 months...

Yep, USB support next year. I reckon the system has it already, but that either (a) one needs to connect the HMI to a USB interface via a custom plug, or (b) there's a USB connector inside the crank unit.

It seem that the dealer's diagnostic system uses a USB plug - wouldn't it be great if us ordinary buyers could get the software to drive that? I imagine this would permit the reprogramming of response maps, so you could get an off-road or super-eco mode, depending on what you need. I'd be...

Eddieo, this is just an initial review; a proper one will be in a few weeks, once the bike has bedded down. I'll get a good photo session done as well  Blewit, thanks. Last night I downloaded an English version of the Ave manual... they do exist! It says this: So, I'll see if Onbike...

    Initial thoughts on Ave XH-3

The problem with testing bikes a notch or two above an already-busted budget is that you end up wanting one. The Ave XH-3 must be a case in point, since by some peculiar phenomenon I now seem to own one; thankfully half of the purchase price was covered by an insurance claim, which of course is...

    Spot the difference...

Caph, I can't see (from this thread at least) that your rudeness to David is warranted here. I've read enough of his posts here to find his contributions both interesting and civil. Can you not disagree with greater politeness?

    New! Sirocco-Sport from Woosh

I should think you're allowed to monopolise your own thread, hatti :) Your profile of the younger e-biker is very interesting - and I consider myself, at mid thirties, to be in this bracket. I've found quite a lot of the tourer bikes to be aesthetically unappealing, with a handling style that...

What bike test-drive policies do you have?

Many thanks to Martin at Onbike, who does indeed let customers out for decent test rides. Yesterday I took out a AVE XH-3 for twenty minutes, swiftly followed by this year's Emotion Neo Cross. The local terrain outside their trading estate location is very hilly, and ideal for testing decent...

    48V e bike

If you can't try the bike out for a good 15-30 minutes, then I'd personally advise caution - whether it feels like a good bike to you is important. Admittedly I've only ever bought new, but with a second-hand purchase, I'd suggest you take a (borrowed and/or unpowered) bike along to the seller's...

    New! Sirocco-Sport from Woosh

Thanks for the review d8veh, and thanks to hatti for loaning out the bike to a solid reviewer! I guess you'll not be able to do a long-term review, if it's a loan? It'd be of general interest to see reviews at 12 months old (just outside guarantee) and at any points after that - especially for a...
