5A 36V charger, evaluation and modding

My packs are 11Ah, but they make larger ones too and don't recommend above 4Ah (My guess because charge connectors, wiring etc over sustained charge times will heat/melt in extreme cases). A 5A fuse typically takes 10A to blow. It'll sustain 7/8A for quite a long time.

Mercedes New Secret Weapon to Fight Tesla!

Mercedes selling that motor as a weight saving benefit is absurd. Mercs have always weighed a ton more than equivalent vehicles from other manufacturers, and it's that weight/solidity that makes them drive the way they do. An S-class at 130mph feels safe because it weighs as much as it does (I...

5A 36V charger, evaluation and modding

The question should be whether your BMS can take 5A. Two of my batteries for one of my e-bikes the manufacturer says can take a maximum of 4A, but they don't recommend it nor do they make/supply a 4A charger. I don't. Power supplies designed with a fan use small heatsinks because the design...

    Somerby Pendleton Battery Issue

You need to fully charge and then measure the battery voltage with a voltmeter. Of the two common Pendleton battery types, one of them left 1 LED lit only to show it was "on"; you had to press the button for state of charge. AFAIK, both types have/had a sleep function when not used after a few...

    Ultimate bike camper?

So what kind of mileage are you getting on your outings (i.e. how far from home are you able to venture with all your camping kit)? Have you plans to increase battery capacity to enable longer tours?

    Batteries Charging Routine

I can see why some support this view; Switching the charger on pre-charges the internal output capacitors preventing sparks/damaging the charging socket/pin contacts. Saying that, one of my own bikes/chargers uses a relay in circuit which prevents that anyway. So it's bike/charger dependant...

    Fat tyred ebike manufacturers fined.

Whoever the 9 fined manufacturers are, Rad Power say they aren't one of them in this blog-post on their own EU website here.

    Vanmoof going under??

Of greater alarm to me is the linked article about RadPower bikes here pulling out of Europe and the UK entirely from 2024. I'd think there'd be a comparatively much larger number of Rad bike owners being simpler/cheaper bikes. That's still a blow to the owner to lose EU/UK support.

Raleigh Stow-e-way (stoweway) - Very slow and barely doing any assist

That sounds normal... I actually meant the 5 red battery LED's on the handlebar display. Do they all suddenly cut-out too whilst riding up your hill and the bike "switches itself off", or do you just lose motor power? Either way, IMO there's something wrong and your only remedy whilst the bike...

Raleigh Stow-e-way (stoweway) - Very slow and barely doing any assist

In ebiketips review, they say "In the highest of the four power levels the bike romped up all but the steepest of hills", and they test ride up some of Bristol's most vicious hills. When the bike cuts out, do all 5 of the battery indicators go out too?

Raleigh Stow-e-way (stoweway) - Very slow and barely doing any assist

Your weight is well within limits (I'm heavier and have a similar 20" folding e-bike). How steep are the hills you're riding where the bike "switches itself off"?

Raleigh Stow-e-way (stoweway) - Very slow and barely doing any assist

Afterthought: When you say you bought the bike in December, was it new or secondhand? I ask because this sounds like a knackered/worn-out battery.

Raleigh Stow-e-way (stoweway) - Very slow and barely doing any assist

The answer is no. It's a closed CANbus system. Even with the dealer diagnostics software (which I have here) you can't change the maximum assisted speed beyond the statutory 15.5mph, and the amount of assistance is what it is (there's 4 levels of assist IIRC?). If you feel the bike isn't...

    Pendleton Somerby pre 2019

All Phylion batteries were supplied with either a Smart BMS or a Standard one. Halfords had a habit of using the Smart version even though their bikes didn't use those connections (Halfords used the ports in store only to check battery usage - see the pasted comment above). My understanding is...

    Pendleton Somerby pre 2019

It's quite possible they were made in various other countries too - like Vietnam or Cambodia. The point is, production was moved out of China AFAIK to avoid the levies. Up until that point they used the Phylion SF-03 battery, and the newer Czech ones (the ones I've seen) the Battle style, and...

    Pendleton Somerby pre 2019

AFAIK the change happened when the EU raised the charges levied on ready-assembled e-bikes imported from China. My assumption is that it was at that point Halfords changed making their e-bikes in China to Eastern Europe to avoid those protectionist taxes (It was suspected that the Chinese Govt...

Mmm. The Yose link I gave in post #2 HERE is for a pre-2019 Pendleton battery, and HERE is a Yose link for the post-2019 Pendleton battery (sleeved version). Both styles are commonly used by many bike makers throughout Europe.; neither design is exclusive to Halfords or their Pendleton Somerby...
