    8fun crank drive kit

... and a 72V bike will get there even faster no doubt. But the point is that there's a balance between speed and power on a bicycle for it to feel in any way natural. It's a matter of individual taste. If I'm not pedalling I'd far rather sit on a comfy moped than a bike saddle cruising at 43mph...

    8fun crank drive kit

Nonsense Frank - unless you're 20 stone or want to cruise around on a moped without pedaling then maybe ! Even with all the hills round here I don't pull more than about 350-500W most of the time - only up a >15% slope would I pull 700-1kw. Over 1.2kW acceleration is a waste of battery for an...

    Interesting take on e-bike speed

It'll definitely be a hefty motor - would hope so too at that weight ! Predictably way overpriced - but probably not as overpriced as a Haibike or a £3.5k S-Pedelec :p. That 10Ah battery isn't going to do more than about 15-20 miles tops in Turbo in San Francisco either lol.

How's about this, then - For sale on ebay...

^^ looks like they're down the road from you ... why not ask if they've got a demonstrator to take for a spin :p

    New build.

Are you going to build in a charger socket ? I've only had to open my box once in 3 months. Was so worthwhile !

    SPD (clip-in) pedals

You get a set of cleats with the pedals but check as they're sometimes SH-51s which aren't as easy to release as SH-56s. Sometimes the more expensive shimano shoes come without cleats but the cheapest pair I bought came with them. Down from about £50 to £22 in a sale. Worn them every day this...

    SPD (clip-in) pedals

No probs - check out chainreactioncycles too ... I bought most of mine from them last year as come October they had a massive sale and I got 30-70% off. You can also return free of charge (they pay the shipping) like Wiggle if they don't fit ... sizing can be tricky buying on-line.

    SPD (clip-in) pedals

Wouldn't be without clipless pedals. Fitted PD-647s on both bikes and they're great - couldn't imagine going back to skidding off flat pedals :). I stay clipped in on one side all the time so pedals can always be set right when pulling away from a stop. You can easily stay clipped out on the...

Newbie questions - why mountain bikes for kits, and why no batteries on front?

Hardtails, yes - especially if you're not really hammering them off-road. On the road they seem pretty much tailor made for mid-powered eBikes. One thing I have absolutely no worries about on the Trek is the frame ! I personally think on-road once you exceed about 30-35mph the handling of a...

    CST - it's all working

Cracked 850 trouble-free hilly miles today. Very happy with this baby and getting fonder of it by the week ... it's hard right now to imagine being without it. Maybe the change in Season will dampen the love but I built this for Summer/early to mid Autumn 2013 and it's surpassed all my...

Newbie questions - why mountain bikes for kits, and why no batteries on front?

39 miles a day commuting with lots of hills is a lot even on an e-bike. FWIW if it were me I'd not underspec either the battery or motor. I'd also get a sturdy frame, comfy grips, a decent saddle, some on-board music, built-in lights etc. ... if you're going to put that sort of mileage in the...

advice for newbie, crank or hub for first timer

Yes. S12P is to run sensorless according to specs sheet so presumably you just leave the Hall Sensors disconnected. You can also still get the KU123 controller which although not compatible with the LCD from BMS Battery is good for 36/48V. Do you want to run on a throttle or try to use the PAS...

    Kettle-plug power connector alternatives?

It's very funny reading the hot debates on connectors on RC forums. I thought XT90s were the new industry standard ... :)

advice for newbie, crank or hub for first timer

Not sure how well those sine wave controllers work with such a powerful motor... I'd personally just fit a throttle (or preferably 2 two thumb throttles across a switch - one sprung and the other unsprung with a brake cutoff). Be interested to hear if someone's tried one. Although the motor's...

    Kettle-plug power connector alternatives?

I bought some of those and was looking at changing the Deans ones when I rewired everything. But having test-soldered a couple onto a length of wire decided the Deans ones seemed better and neater. You can get them with ribs on for extra grip when connecting/disconnecting - I like these much better.

    Kettle-plug power connector alternatives?

Yup ... Deans on the battery to controller lead interface (battery side)... I use Anderson Powerpoles on the controller side). I use Neutrik XLR for the battery to charger connector and Anderson Powerpoles on the controller to motor phase wires.

advice for newbie, crank or hub for first timer

If you go crank then get a decent Bosch, Impulse or Panasonic one with a proper intuitive torque sensor etc. The CST as a conversion option will be much cheaper than the above (about £500-£600 outlay as opposed to £1.5 - £2.5k since you already have the bike) .. unless you really go to town on...

    Advice needed

Not necessarily - the Shimano Alfine 11 has worked great for me and has a large gear range. Nuvinci is just another hub gear solution. I personally like having manual control of gear shifting and don't think automatic or electric gear shifting is something we all need to be talked into believing...

    Sports Tracker

Quite the tour :). Does that work on GPS rather than needing to have a mobile phone signal (about 75% of where I ride has no signal at all) ? As a matter of interest how many Wh did you use taking that journey at 12mph average ? Was heartened to get 32miles out of a measured 10Ah by dropping...
