Do you regularly wear a cycle helmet?

I do believe it might have been an attempt at humour - of the ironic kind.

Broken drop-outs - lesson to all, fit a torque arm.

I did the same, at first. Took a little while for the penny to drop :)

The must have tools you haven't thought about

Yes, GT85 actually lubricates, unlike WD40. While WD40 does have some uses, it's the most over-hyped, over-rated aerosol known to man.

Shock warning! Should we ask for Registration?

In four pages I don't know if anyone pointed out the major difference between bicycles (even e-bikes) and motorcycles/cars. It's easy for a thief to cart a bike up the stairs and into his garret to strip down for bits to flog down the pub/ebay/craigslist/etc. I know the selling for parts point...

Broken drop-outs - lesson to all, fit a torque arm.

The wheel is turning anti-clock, the spindle wants to counter that and go clockwise, so the torque arm must counter that in turn and be anchored anti-clockwise.

    Key Question.

There's nothing like the feeling of a tool that's just right.

    Cycling under the rain

Yeps, sod that. I'm strictly a fair-weather cyclist. I'm putting the car off the road and a motorcycle back on, full time, so it's not as if I'm a fair-weather rider all together. It's only in the past decade I've always had a car or van on the road full-time and prior to that, my main mode of...

Is this the bike for you?

You find that with small-engined scoots (and motorcycles, too). Keep the throttle pinned and speed up and don't slow down for corners or peds and it's amazing how quick you can be. Until you come a cropper, of course. Totally daft in London, as I've proven to myself time and again in London and...

    Voltage reducers

I've not tried it yet, but some on ES have mentioned that a standard universal charger for a phone/ipod/etc will happily take 36/48V DC on its mains input and output the normal 5V/3V/whatever. Facilitated I suppose by the nature of the SMPS circuitry in them. There may be a lower voltage they...

The last witch burning in Ireland

Thanks to Lyn for mentioning this site... Trail Tipperary 1 Further down the page, we come to this... "When I turned left 2 kms from Cloneen Village on the Drangan road I cycle through Ballyvadlea. This reminds me of a incident that took place in that townland where the last witch in...

Emotive rubbish and a logical inconsistency.

Is this the bike for you?

Usual knee-jerk nonsense. I resent the implication that everyone who has a clue will use shoddy components. I'm happy enough with my 26mph and if I were to got at 40mph, I'm sure as shift not going to use standard bicycle parts. Really, do you think everyone who puts a e-bike together is...

Is this the bike for you?

But speed, in and of itself, doesn't kill. I mean, you don't suddenly die if you go above 25mph, do you? Now, inappropriate speed can kill - just ask any traffic copper. They've seen it all, in all shades of gory red. But you'll hardly find one that says, in a blanket fashion, "Speed kills"...

    Wandering in Wiltshire...

Oh, well I'm very close (within easy drive) of the Barrow Navigation for a lot of its length, so that needs a closer look. The Barrow Navigation What it doesn't show there is the Nore from Inistiogue to Kilkenny used to be navigable too and the old locks and approaches are still there, but...

    Wandering in Wiltshire...

Lyn, your mention of towpaths has me thinking about canalside rides here - over the years, the canal system in Ireland has undergone a lot of reclamation and I must have a look to see what the towpath situation is like. I expect there will be parts that are next to impassable, but I envisage...

Do you regularly wear a cycle helmet?

Early reports had it the kids were only wearing simple floatation devices, not full lifejackets and they weren't enough to keep their heads above water. If such is the case, it shows how stupidity still rules the roost in some places.

    Twin motor, 2 wheel drive

The most interesting Twini was a cut'nshut job (using two front ends, back to back) for the Forestry Service of some African nation - Uganda, iirc. You could take it up narrow tracks where there was no opportunity to turn around.
