I always put plenty of grease on the pedal threads and screw them on with fingers until they are fully in place before doing them up with spanner. That seems to have saved me from cross threading them by accident.

I think most bike wheels projects would have nil chance without kickstarters. Kickstarters offer them a mean of harvesting early adopters without much outlay and allow them to say more or less anything they like, american style PR, without fearing the wrath of the ASA.
