Do you need to use the Hitachi software to interface with the camera? Can't you remove the memory card and use iMovie or some other mac software for your editing? I'm probably being too simplistic, but I know very little about video cameras.

Sorry to jump in, but I have both types. The non-zoom is more powerful by quite a margin. The zoom light is ok and I find it works best as a flood light. If you zoom it too much, it focuses to an intense rectangle of light.
