3-speed hub gears are perfectly good for crank drive conversions, probably more than the 7-speed Nexus.

Help me understand my new ebike

at 15mph, air resistance counts for about 90% of the bike's power consumption, 10% to rolling resistance. The air resistance is proportional to the power 3 (cube) of the speed. Changing the tyres to thinner slick jets will add a very small amount to your average speed while reducing your safety.

    Kalkoff batteries again !

why do you assume it's made of 18650s? it could well be made of pouch cells.

Yet another London female cyclist dies

isn't it true that none of the deaths involve an e-bike? then the answer should be that women cyclists must think of riding e-bikes, especially one that is equipped with an electric horn loud enough to be heard in noisy traffic (like the Big Bear).

Crank drive pedelecs: chain wear and maintenance

woosh have upgraded the KMC chain on their Krieger and Santana CD to KMC X series. They have golden colour links and the links seem to be more supple than the previous Z series. Thay are supposed to last longer too.

how good are you with DIY? can you remove the bottom bracket of your Carrera for example?

    Some conversion help please

why? zillions of people ride CD without ever complaining about noisy gear change. If you are not facing up a steep hill at traffic lights, the gear change is just as smooth as with a normal bike as the motor only starts an instant after the bike has moved. For the uphill gear change, slightly...

    Climbing and overheating

d8veh figure of 65% is correct, I did have my units mixed up. Your motor won't overheat, nothing to worry about.

    Climbing and overheating

    my mistake, the M155 is a 350W - same power as the 8-Fun BPM, the XFC07 is a 250W. http://www.dapumotors.com/portfolio/m155cd/

    Climbing and overheating

From the OP's quoted figure of 9-10mph for gradients between 5% to 10%. if you take the XFC07, 9% and 9.5mph, it's ballpark comparison. If you replace the Dapu with the BPM, you get 10.6mph, 35% yield, 65% turned into heat.

    Climbing and overheating

that 57 seconds number is from ebikes.ca - to be taken for comparision between motors. Just listen out for your motor and reduce the throttle if it whines badly.

Right kit for Boardman Hybrid Team and 33 mile round hilly commute

when you squeeze the brakes, the motor cuts out quickly, but the stator continues to run, the disengaged clutch cannot stop that. Its inertia is added to the bike's kinetic energy. When the motor starts again, the acceleration of a hub motor is inversely proportional to the reduction ratio, A...

    Climbing and overheating

he is right to ask this question, he's got a hub motor, his good cadence does not help the motor spinning any faster. Presumably, he'll run the Dapu at maximum assist on the climb. Using the motor simulator at ebikes.ca, I think the OP can approximate the Dapu as equivalent to the XFC07. The...

Carrera Subway 1 conversion 500w bafang which battery

you have made a good choice, don't worry about that. About broken chains, they usually have nothing to do with the motors, you need a lot more power to brake a good chain than a 750W motor.

Right kit for Boardman Hybrid Team and 33 mile round hilly commute

the inertia of the rotor adds a lot of stress to the spokes when the motor starts and stops and during braking when the motor overruns, even slightly. CD motors don't do that because the chain takes the jerking movements out. Two other problems often encountered when fitting a hub kit are...

    Legality of power ratings

that motor is an OEM job. If the OEM specifies 25A 250W then the factory produces exactly for that specs and marks the motor exactly as the OEM asked. It's the responsibility of the OEM to restrict what to send to that motor.
