    New convert

Gerry, Your Focus Cayo is a quality, sharp handling lightweight road bike. Any ebike - even a £2K one - is going to be something of a pudding in comparison. Best you try one or two to see if that's acceptable. At the risk of being labelled a snob, I'm afraid all the ebikes on your shortlist...

    NuVinci CVT (Automatic Gears) Hub

Quite so, although the bike manufacturer is surely obliged to warrant the whole bike, so they cannot say we are not covering you because a Shimano - or any other maker's - component failed. Another point is Bosch specify the maximum assistance in a hub installation as 200%, but 250% for a...

please help: recommend me a bike/kit for Outer Hebrides

I don't think you will go far wrong with a Bosch equipped bike. The system appears reliable and it tends to only be fitted to bikes that are of good quality. De-restricting a Bosch bike is a bit of a faff with a dongle and some wiring, but there's no drag from the system so you can pedal them...

    Osprey returns to Scottish Loch

I was at Kielder forest/reservoir today. A cafe owner told me the men who operate the ferry had seen an osprey in the last few days. Bit more here: Quick update from the frozen North! | Kielder Ospreys

    Woosh Sirocco Sport

Quality control is not the strongest point of cheaper bikes, although you've done well to sort it, and the bike is now likely to be reliable. After I posted my review of the Scirocco 2 a couple of rear spokes broke. That can happen on any bike, and may have been a function of my weight and...

    Electric Brompton going strong

If you do contact Brompton, as them when or if - their electric Brompton is going to see the light of day.

    Electric Brompton going strong

Benjy's doing several thousand miles a year on his Brompton - not many bikes would stand that. The transmission is said to be a weak point, although my Nano has a front hub motor which should take some of the strain. For what it's worth, I think 'BSR' on the gear hub stands for Brompton...

Hi and advice on spare battery purchase

To make it easy for those on here who know about batteries, you need to post a link to the bike. As you are new, I will do it for you - is this it? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Eco-Stepper-Folding-Electric-Black/dp/B007WOS2IO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1364138650&sr=8-1 The range of ebikes is heavily...

Woosh Scirocco 2 - independent review

MANY buyers will be drawn to the Scirocco due to its long list of equipment and relatively cheap price. But is this a bike which looks good on screen, but performs poorly on the road, or a happy mix of both short and long term appeal? First impressions out of the (very large) box were better...

    How to keep warm?

I have a pair of Sealskinz socks and they are much warmer than ordinary 'thermal' socks. However, they are not magic and neither are they cheap at about £30. Socks : SealSkinz, Waterproof, Breathable, Closefitting Mine came from Halfords.

    recommend tyres size 37-622

Change the tubes while you are at it to get rid of those stupid Woods/Dunlop valves. Look for tubes with a bit of weight which will give you a little extra puncture protection. Not that you should need it with Marathon Pluses - everyone says they are pretty much bomb proof.

    My new bike

Thanks for a few more complimentary - and knowledgeable - posts. Alex, they are Ergon grips - the instruction leaflet is in the pack with the rest. I like the way they've engineered the dropouts, the wheel will certainly come out OK. Tensioning the chain should be easy enough, set the...

    My new bike

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments. Rose is a proper bike maker and is well-respected in the ordinary cycling community. The bikes are very understated, recognisably German. Almost everything on my bike is black, and the finishes are all anodised or matt, not glossy. About the only...

    My new bike

After a few months of looking on and off for a big wheel bike to go with the Brommie, the deed is now done. I am the proud owner of a Rose Xtra Watt Trekking 500. In Rose-speak, that's a Bosch crank drive trekking bike with the bigger battery and the Alfine 11-speed hub. I am also no...

    LifeCycle Strada GT

This is one of the Lifecycles which has a naughty off-road button, so it will belt along if you want it to. I've ridden other Lifecycles with this feature and it really makes a difference to achievable top speed. The Strada GT also appears to have an enormous battery, good if you like...

KTM Macina dual hs - the eagle has landed!!

The walk assistance - like the regular assistance - transmits power through the crank and gears. So I can imagine trying to walk in too high a gear up a hill might give a juddering sensation. Wissy could try walking in different gears.

Took the plunge and now bought my first e-bike!!

No grease? Anything will do, vaseiine, ear wax (yuk) cooking oil, any other oil you have to hand, or don't bother - many people don't. A drop or smear of something on the thread is worth doing if you plan to remove the pedals, but otherwise it doesn't matter.

    Hello to everybody!

No point in going more than 15mph on your most regular journey of a mile, it will only save you seconds. You will up the average speed a bit with a faster bike on the longer journey, but we are only talking a mph or two, so again the time saved won't be a lot. Also you are asking for trouble...
