Short but hilly commute? Which bike.

Hopefully the shop in Long Eaton will let you have a go on one. Worth doing, even if it's not the exact bike you want to buy. They all have similar levels of grunt, so a test ride will give you a good idea if an ebike will do the job or not.

Short but hilly commute? Which bike.

Hello (again) Sarah - it was me in the other place who suggested you look at woosh. Given your particular circumstances, I doubt there's much point in looking any further. Ebikes in this price range are of similar quality and the riding experience doesn't differ a great deal. The only other...

    New Woosh Crank-drive Bike

Another point is 'Wetton Mill' and 'Manifold Trail' means naff-all to a prospective visitor. Saying it's east of Leek in Staffordshire, or something similar, would be more helpful. Yes, most people can use Google, but if the idea is to attract people then making it as easy as possible to find...

Storck Raddar Multitask OR KTM Macina Race OR What?

The Bosch leaflet for their crank drive advises keeping the cadence up for maximum motor efficiency. I think the idea is to make it as much like a 'proper' bike as possible - the most efficient climbing technique is to spin a lower gear rather than try to power a higher one.

Took the plunge and now bought my first e-bike!!

Hatti, I won't tell you not to worry about you daughter because it won't stop you doing so. But I can tell you London is now more cycle friendly - and thus safer - than it's ever been. There has been a huge increase in cyclists in the capital in the last 10 years or so which means most...

    16" folder electrification

The bike you linked to is a cheap, and almost certainly, nasty device. The only thing I would convert it to is a scrap bale. Sixteen inch wheels are not ideal off-road - I have a Brompton, the best folder there is, but it's not much cop off-road, so nothing else will be. Add the cost of the...

    hi

Stan, Two years doesn't seem very long for the battery to last, unless Powabykes are known to have poor ones. Has it been in regular use? 'Use it or lose it' seems to be the motto for batteries. On the subject of use, there are a few members on here in the North East and we have a forum ride...

    Very worried

Just to add, another method of tensioning a chain is to tap a wedge between the tyre and the brace across the chainstays. Best to move the rear mudguard off its mounting first, if one is fitted.

    Are you anywhere near Telford...?

    Very worried

Ah, didn't see that. I'm told the method is used by single speed racers - they obviously give the bike some beans and need a taught chain to prevent it skipping.

    Hub gears and chain tension

Thanks, I can grasp that although would never have worked it out myself.

    Hub gears and chain tension

Could someone explain to me why chain tension seems to have an impact on the performance of a hub gear. Neither Alex or spinalot on here are cycle mugs, but both have found chain tension to be critical to making the hub gear work properly. But I don't get it. The single sprocket on the...

    Very worried

There is another way to tension the chain. Pull the non-drive side of the wheel as far back into the drop-out as it will go and semi-tighten the nuts on both sides, but you want the non-drive one a little tighter. Pull the wheel into alignment by moving it effectively from right to left - as...

KTM Macina dual hs - the eagle has landed!!

The lights have a capacitor so they will stay on when you stop in traffic. Sometimes it's only the rear one which is wired to do that.

    Charity Ride, electric bikes invited?

Allan, I think it's great you are trying to integrate ebikes into a mainstream cycling event. But have you considered what the other riders will think? Some of the carbon-riding roadies are notoriously snobbish and are known for taking themselves way too seriously. I can foresee some...

The Great E- Bike Bank Heist

I witnessed a street robbery on a bicycle. Young lad cycling on the pavement appeared to crash into a female pedestrian. I thought that's all it was until she screamed: "He's got my phone!" as he legged it. I gave chase and so did a passing taxi driver who was, er, of better physique than me...

    The nature of my game.

Nice bike - how are you getting on with the suspension seatpost? I see you run a single pannier bag. From a safety point of view, it's a good idea to have the bag on the side facing the traffic because it gives you a bit more road width and presence in the eyes of drivers approaching from...

    Best Looking E-bikes!

I was wondering about that. No suspension fork, ally frame, narrowish tyres and Brooks saddle could add up to a real boneshaker.

    Puncture Proofing

Fifty psi sounds a bit low for best puncture protection. The tyres are rated up to 65psi, so I would try them at 60. LAND CRUISER
