    BikeBiz story about eBikes.

What makes you thing that greater speed - which is what I assume you mean - will become legal in the UK?

    E-Bike over 250W Legal??

Take up a pipe. I use to smoke one on my motor bikes sometimes forty odd years ago, and some people did a double take.

    Cyclist fined for speeding

Free from prosecution under motor vehicle law. But not, as you know from a charge of furious cycling under earlier law.

How much water/abuse can an ebike handle?

I don’t think anyone would advocate using one as a semi submersible. I was referring to any of the usual higher end bikes doing a job for the OP on wet and muddy trails, not riding in rivers; though flecc says he got his Panasonic submerged once I doubt if he would want to do it too often. OP...

Been reported for Riding without a license and no insurance

If it’s the bike in the pic on the other thread it’s legal and plod has made a mistake. I knew someone with one of the a few years ago and she was always getting stopped but it was okay when they realised it had pedals and was electric. He almost certainly thought it was a scooter and then...

How much water/abuse can an ebike handle?

Any of the main ones like Bosch or Kalkhoff Impulse or Yamaha will do the job. Most MBs have the Yamaha or Bosch, and only the Focus which is the MB sister Kalkhoff brand uses the Impulse as far a I know. Look up the off road thread here. Eddie PJ posts about his rides with a Bosch powered bike...

Kalkhoff Evo Activity v Woosh Big Bear

The Kalkhoff is torque sensor so will need more input from you to get the max power out than a BB possibly. Having said that they say that they have a built in cadence sensor in the Evo model as well so it might give something like the best of both worlds. The Evo will be a lot better made and...

Looking to buy Specialised Turbo. Can i have it re flashed?

Yep, of course the dealer told him the reason he wouldn’t do it and that’s why he offered a so called waver about using it on private land. Which the dealer would know was daft. So it does come down to legalities. Besides the OP’s fall back is to buy one from Germany or Austria as far as I can...

Looking to buy Specialised Turbo. Can i have it re flashed?

Well, to be fair he was talking about using it in the UK on private land and that was why the dealer was not happy to do it. The point being that it really is almost impossible to find private land in the UK which does not have public access via footpaths and suchlike. So in practice the dealer...

Looking to buy Specialised Turbo. Can i have it re flashed?

Still, that is just your opinion and you have nothing to lose. He says he has taken legal advice and they might be. I can see why KTM is banging his drum, and why the trade is worried about irresponsible people killing e MBs off at organised venues before they really get going. So he is...

    which Woosh

He’s Hattie’s uncle. I jest - I think. He was or still is linked to the company as an investor or some such, so does know what’s going on there.

    wooden pedelec with Bosch drive

Looks very nice. I didn’t click the link but I assume it’s laminated rather like a wartime Mosquito. If it’s good enough for a 400 knot aeroplane why not a bike frame.

Clacking noise - Kalkhoff Impulse 2 motor

I’ve never heard of these problems with the Impulse 1 motor, so it might be that by upping the power and torque with the 2 they have run into a limiting weakness with some of the motor internals. That sort of thing seems to happen with e bikes more now in drive trains particularly, and there is...

    E-Bike over 250W Legal??

Melvyn’s reaction to being told his kit wasn’t actually legal was a bit OTT don’t you think? No need to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Just buy a capable legal bike with will do what most people want, or take your chances with an electric motor bike. We’re all grown ups and can make our...

News: The rise of the speed pedelec

17mph is within the ten percent tolerance allowed by the law so is legal. It depends whether you can set your bike to it. Some LCDs allow speed setting in implements of one mile per hour and some bikes like Kalkhoff set the cut out at just over 17mph by default.

    E-Bike over 250W Legal??

Try some legal bikes. The 250w figure is purely nominal and the latest ones will peak at about 700w or even more. That will get you up most hills without putting in a lot of effort. I use my Kalkhoff Impulse on very steep hills in west Wales and I have never had to use the lowest gear once. I...

    250w vs 500w

I wrote further up the thread that for what you say you want I would fit a crank drive kit. I’m not sure how much they cost with the battery but you could get a good one from Woosh with a full warranty for under your budget. So a s/h eBay bike and a bit of fettling if you don’t have one and...

    250w vs 500w

It is if you want to go uphill or fast on the flat. That’s what I meant above about not all kits and motors being equal. They might all be rated nominally at 250W but some will peak at 700W or so and some will struggle to actually give you 250W. The cheap eBay kits are not very powerful usually...
