    Gadget show testing e-bikes again

Gordonal, Have you looked at the clip? If you think that Kalkhoff performs well in it, fine. We disagree.

    Gadget show testing e-bikes again

Are you seriously trying to tell me the Kalkhoff in the clip climbed well? It came second, a poor second, in a contest of two. I thought the battery was flat.

    Gadget show testing e-bikes again

That Kalkhoff shows all the weaknesses of crank bikes. The gear change is poor, it lacks power - possibly for fear of damaging the transmission - and it won't deliver what power it does have when the rider wants it. Turning over a lower gear faster to climb a hill - as the lass did in the...

Ebikes versus normal bikes for commuting

A bike I would consider were I spending a nice few quid on a commuter is a Moustache: Moustache Bikes | Lundi 26 NUVINCI Should do the job, a bit quirky and at least there won't be load of others at every traffic lights.

Ebikes versus normal bikes for commuting

The Kalkhoff the OP is considering has a 15ah battery which must be a major selling point. With the OP's 23mile commutes, a 10ah would need to be charged every day and it wouldn't be long in terms of months before degradation set in. The 15ah wouldn't need charging so often and has a longer...

    Cheap eBay crank drive kit

As was the Sinclair C5, which is hardly a recommendation. Although most people were too busy laughing at the rest of it to worry about the motor.

First electric ride in... 11 months..and cadence question

The problem with this method is some pedals are set further forward than others, depending on the geometry of the frame. An extreme example is this Gazelle, which is designed for the rider's feet to be flat on the ground when stopped: BALANCE INNERGY (2012) - ELECTRIC BICYCLE Incidentally...

First electric ride in... 11 months..and cadence question

Usual saddle height advice is to set the saddle so that your leg is fully extended with your heel on the pedal. Obviously, you cycle with the ball of your foot on the pedal, but the heel method gives about the right height for most people.

Kit or complete new bike? Not pedal assist?

Others on here know far more about kits than I do, but I think almost any bike can be electrified fairly easily. The 'Electric Bicycles - general discussion' section of the forum is busier than this one, so post the name of your bike and the question on there and I'm sure you'll get some...

Kit or complete new bike? Not pedal assist?

The legality of a throttle is a grey area, but most people accept they are within UK law - at the moment. What is clear - and more important - is the bike cannot go more than about 15mph on electric power alone, however that power is applied. There are dozens of electric bikes on sale with...

    Initial thoughts on Ave XH-3

All the commuter bikes I saw parked on-street in London earlier this year had fixed seat clamps. Clever 'unique key' version here: Seatpost Clamp Security - Atomic22

    Initial thoughts on Ave XH-3

This hardly inspires me to buy a crank drive, or are we saying the 250w 'legal' ones don't wear transmissions unduly? Referring to range, some enormous distances - 100miles + - quoted for Kalkhoff's 2013 bikes: Kalkhoff : Models 2013

    Initial thoughts on Ave XH-3

Hardly, given the system's apparent appetite for cassettes and derailleurs. And most Bosch bikes have small batteries - is the range any good?

My review of the new Woosh Sirocco Sport

Someone will be along shortly to claim that because it's got two wheels and a saddle it must be a rip-off of another design.

    New! Sirocco-Sport from Woosh

Might be something in that. At a guess, if you spend £2K on a German ebike, £1,200 or more is profit and VAT. Give Hatti £600 for one of these, and I doubt profit and tax comes to much more than £300.

    New! Sirocco-Sport from Woosh

It's only six hundred quid, so it's a cheap, reasonably cheerful ebike with proper manufacturer parts. It's also from a brand which carries stock and of which I've heard no complaints. Where's the beef?
