    Helmets in Aldi

In that respect, we certainly live in a land of plenty. I've never liked those multi-coloured, multi-slotted helmets - fine for lycra wearing carbon riding road whippets - but they look stupid on a middle-aged bloke like me wobbling along the cycle path on a Brompton. I'd be happy to wear the...

    Longer, faster, more!

I love these threads, they keep me bemused for days as I fail to understand one technical post after another. (With a nod to d8veh's post number 45 here: http://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/electric-bicycles/13397-3k-spend-what-would-you-recommend-5.html )

    New build Carrera Kracken conversion.

I've read some stories of the more powerful motors breaking the drop-outs in the forks. Wouldn't a high-torque motor be better fitted in the rear wheel?

£3K to spend, what would you recommend?

Others may have a view, but I think a £1,500 Chinese bike would last five years with moderate use and proper maintenance. What Chinese bikes don't provide, to me, is that indefinable joy of ownership when stood still. Another point is a London commuting bike tends to get knocked about...

£3K to spend, what would you recommend?

Possibly, but I rarely need to change gear on my ebike, and I expect you will find the same. Depends on terrain of course, but my cruising gear - fourth out of six - is good for nippy starts from rest and all but the steepest hills. The Rohloff hub is seen as the bees knees for a quality...

anyone know what noise this is?

Clearly, Frank must be the man who knows, or who knows a man who knows. But before contacting him, I would check all the little screws on the motor are nipped up. I had a similarish noise on the Brompton Nano which was all but cured by tightening the screws on the motor's casing. A couple of...

To me, the pair of them have provided a ready made case for this old saying: "Laws are for the guidance of wise men and the blind obedience of fools."

    Lovely ride. We're Happy.

The bloke who was injured in Sunderland had just packed up to come off. One of the others out there said he was holding the railing on one side when the wave hit him. He was swept clear across the pier and slammed into the railing on the other side which broke his leg. Better that than being...

    Lovely ride. We're Happy.

Ah, could be. It's quite a long way, the anglers don't routinely have access to the tunnel, but a lot of them cycle on the top of it to get to the end where most of them fish. Worth pointing out for those who don't know the area, the pier is a breakwater so is solid and made of masonry, not a...

£3K to spend, what would you recommend?

You mention fast commuter, so one you could consider is a Lifecycle City Sport. It has an off-road 'naughty' button and if you are prepared to use that, it doesn't half go. I've tried a fair few bikes over the last six months and the Lifecycle is the fastest by far. The naughty button lets...

Decent shifting systems on crank drive pedelecs

I recently tried Kalkhoff derailleur and hub bikes. The derailleur was a bit clonky, but I didn't make any riding style allowances for it. The hub - eight speed - didn't change a couple of times when I wanted it to, but I believe it's like the Sturmey Archer three speed on the Brommie - you...

Decent shifting systems on crank drive pedelecs

What I like about my Brompton Nano is that it still rides like a Brompton - faults and all. The weight of the battery in the front-mounted bag deadens the twitchy steering, which is an improvement. Non-powered Brommie riders who carry luggage say the same. The motor on mine is about as quiet...

    Lovely ride. We're Happy.

I was out for a coast ride yesterday and happened across this air sea rescue in progress: BBC News - Fifteen anglers rescued after wave hit Sunderland pier Very exciting. Actually, it was an air sea tunnel rescue. There is a tunnel running under the pier from the shore to the lighthouse...

Slap a cheap hub drive on this and you'd be up and Rohloffing for what - about £2K? http://www.50cycles.com/bicycles/kalkhoff/kalkhoff_endeavour_rohloff_speedhub_14

£3K to spend, what would you recommend?

The Kalkhoff Endeavour has the much-admired Rohloff hub, but doesn't have a motor: http://www.50cycles.com/bicycles/kalkhoff/kalkhoff_endeavour_rohloff_speedhub_14 'Baskets and things' for the wife's bike indicates Dutch. Royal Dutch Gazelle is a proper manufacturer and its bikes are...

£3K to spend, what would you recommend?

Plenty of nice bikes from £1,000 or so upwards, so no need to spend all your budget - keep some in hand for maintenance. First thing I would sort out is battery power. A lot of bikes - no matter how much you pay - will struggle to do your 40-mile round trip on one charge. Can you charge at...

Decent shifting systems on crank drive pedelecs

And the pesky Germans are best at it. Some of their £2 to £3K ebikes have drivetrains which appear on ordinary bikes costing £300. The vast amount of tax and profit on a top end bike is partly to blame. We all have to make a living. but of a £2K bike, about £1,600 is tax and profit. Far, far...

    Cheeky young blighter!

Pal of mine sells these things. Tells me he's sold a couple of the king size trikes to customers who use them instead of a car. The bigger wheels make a big difference over longer journeys, apparently, which makes trips across town of six or eight miles viable.
