What hub motor is it ? A geared hub will freewheel with no controller unless the motor axle cable is shorted, a DD hub has no freewheel so it won't and is impossible to ride with no power.

I expect the M series even the bbs type offered to OEM will be Canbus and the 8 Fun version uart, there will be two controller types. Time will tell, it will p*ss off the diy market who will have to opt for a Tong or another less reliable Bafang clone.
